Hi, now that I am getting the swing of this I hope that you can help. we are in an IVA for 16 months and along with everything else we are desperate to adopt, we have a lovely home and good people, and know that we can offer stability and love, even with an IVA. Does any one know if you can adopt with an IVA?

Absolutely
As long as it does not affect your ability to pay your IVA.

Agree with Andy on this, it is fairly common for people to have children within an IVA so at the same time I don't see why your IP would object to you adopting.

Hi one month,

I agree with the other experts on this one, my advice would be to always keep your I.P in the loop as they will need to arrange a variation meeting with your creditors as I assume your monthly expenditure will change etc.

I'm glad you asked that question. We have always wanted to foster children when our own are a little bit older. I am a teacher of children with special needs, and know there are a lot of families out there who desperately need short term fostering. I think the maximum you are allowed to work is 16 hours a week (so in our case a 50% drop in my income) but you are paid an allowance for fostering, which would cover some of this drop. I know that for adoption there are no such allowances, just child benefit, so you would have to consider that. (And believe me, with three of my own, your expenditures will increase with a child/children to care for!!)

I have several clients who are foster parents, and on paper the money they received seems quite lucrative, but I'm sure that every penny of it is earned. There would be no restrictions on you adopting or fostering if you are in an IVA, but you will need to show to the local authority that you are financially able to care for a child.
