Because of my debt troubles, worry etc I have been asked if I would join the Samaritans and man one of the phones for one night a week. They do give newcommers alot of training etc but I am a little nervous of saying the wrong thing given the state of mind of the callers - evidently alot call over their state of mind due to debt. Are there any Samaritans on here and does anyone think I could be of use. I would be interested in Melanie's , Jan's and Paul's (ivas4us) opinions please . David

David, I beleive you would say exactly the right thing without training. If you would be happy to do it then go for it, you will be great and find it very rewarding.

I think that you would be a great Samaritan, and if there are any questions you cannot answer, you can always give me a call or send me an e-mail. What a worthwhile thing for you to take on - but how will you ever find the time?
Regards, Melanie Giles, Insolvency Practitioner

thanks Melanie - I really wanted your opinion. I will take it on. I am like you - about 4 - 5 hours sleep is all I need and all I want. Thanks again. David

Having been a staff member on a similar organisation I would say that the training you get is 2nd to none and you will not be let lose on the public until you are ready. You are there as a listener not an advice giver and most people just want some one to listen to them, a rare thing these days. I would say go for it I am sure you will be great with your experience.

Nothing you can buy feels as good as not being in debt.

That's fab David. Your caring side is clear to all on this forum and I'm sure you would be great.
Do they filter calls to 'specialists' on certain subjects or do you get training across the board; Domestic Violence, Drink/Drugs, Gambling, Depression, etc.

My PP told me (he is i/c of the local one) they filter to lawyers, priests, vicars, ministers if needed etc and Melanie has offered to help me if I get stuck with questions I can't deal with. I am going to give it ago - one has got to give something back -just look at all the help I have had from people on here - never met them nor likely to do so - but help they gave.
