Advise Please...xxx

Hiya all. hope you can help.

I think i may have just put my stupid size 6's in it.

I know someone who is skint, real meaning skint, not "might have to dip into the savings skint".

She has NO money at all for her kids gifts at xmas...without even thinking i secretly asked a few mates if they could spare a few quid...so far i have £100 in chqs ready to send to her.

But someone has just emailed me asking if i am sure i have done the right thing....what if she gets angry or upset by this.

Now i am feeling a right plonk cos i didnt stop to think..i just wanted to help a bit.

How would you all feel if you got some money in the post by friends wanting to help...? annoyed...upset...pleased...happy...etc...should i return the chqs to who sent them or send them to her...? i dont want to make things even worse for her.

have i messed up...?

I would think that your friend will feel very humbled at the gesture, but as you know her well what do you think?

Giving and receiving money is a very private thing. I have close friends who, if in the same positon as yours, would gratefully accept the gift, and others who would be offended and feel this an invasion of their privacy.

A gift of money could be difficult. As your friend has young children, might the conversion of the money to say "ToysrUs" vouchers be more acceptable?

And please don't feel that you have done the wrong thing. I am sure that she will be extremely touched by any gesture of assistance, particularly at this time of year.

I love that idea melanie...vouchers does look better than money doesnt it...thank you so much.

I "think" she will be pleased, but another friend who knows her too said maybe not...thats why i got worried.

I think it's a lovely idea Angie, and I'm sure she'll be delighted. Saying that, I do agree with Melanie that vouchers could be the answer.

really made me smile. How many people do we know like that? Many years ago I had a friend who had lost his job and his wife was working away to make ends meet. They had two young children and he was always crying poverty and I was quite concerned about him. Feeling a bit sorry for him I went round one night with a few cans to have a chat. During the conversation about how poor they were he told me that as they had over £8,000 in savings they couldn’t get any social security benefits! I nearly choked on my drink!

How hard does it have to rain before some people will use their savings? Not hard enough for some.

i agree, i have heard the "i am skint" followed by "i haver this much savings" so many times...i am like SAVINGS !!! WHAT ARE THEY....

I know this thread is a little old however just had to say what a big heart you must have to help a friend out like that. Money is always a sensitive subject whether you have it or not. I hope they accepted it graciously as it was intended. I only wish everyone who was struggling had a friend like you! [;)]
