Hi I just have a bit of a question about payments into an iva in our circumstances. We are a forces family and have to move house alot which thankfully the expense is paid for by the forces. We do however get a disturbance allowance which pays for things like, new school clothes for the children when the uniform is different, curtains, the expense of getting the family to the new home and re direction of post etc. My question is if we are in an iva, and we have to move and qualify for the disturbance allowance are we able to keep this or would we have to pay it all into an iva? We get posted around every 2 yrs which isnt ideal but its part of our life and we could really do with keeping that money if and when we get it to cover expenses. Also when my husband gets sent away on courses for weeks on end he gets an allowance for being away would we have to pay that to the iva too?
Its not part of his annual salary its paid if and when he qualifies for it on a month.
Any info would be very much appreciated!

Hi Kate,

No idea on this one. Hopefully Mel will be on later as she is ex forces.

As Jan says, Mel is great with forces. We also have a number of posters who are in the forces or ex forces so hopefully someone will come along to help! x

I would have thought that you could argue that the expenses that come when moving house arent catered for in your I&E statement and are an additional Forced expense and therefore you should be able to keep the additional money given to you for this.
The LSSA that your OH gets for being away would probably classed the same as a civillians overtime payments and depending upon your terms you may have to pay 50% of anything over 10% increase on base salary. There are also bonuses your OH may get if he does enough time away from home in a certain period and again I would think that this would need to be paid into the IVA (or at least half of it). Like the others say Mel may have a more certain answer for you.

This is something to be discussed with a potential IP Kate. I would pick one who has knowledge of forces procedures.

I think it is a good idea to pick one who has forces experience. Mel will certainly advise you on that.

The details are in the 'Ask a question' link. I do wish they would reinstate the Experts link - it was so much easier to find then.

No worries - it used to be under an expert link and I wish admin would put that back - much easier to point people in the direction of expert advice!
