I split up from my wife in March 2006 and left her to live in the house, with our 3 sons. In March 07 the house was reposessed as she did not keep up repayments. Although we are separated we are not yet divorced and the mortgage was still in my name, we also had a secured loan of around £16k.

I’ve recently checked my credit report and the mortgage although showing as a closed account is saying that there is £1600 balance outstanding and there is still £16k outstanding on the secured loan.

Am I still liable for the amounts outstanding? What are options are open to me to clear this money and improve my credit rating?

Hi Paul

I am not an expert here but I would think that you are still jointly liable for those debts ... you can't just walk away from them [:(]

Answering your post though should put it the top of the Forum so that one of the 'experts' should pick up on it soon and offer some more professional advice.

Hi
You will still be liable,in full, for any joint debts.
If you have no assets it may be worth considering bankruptcy to give you a fresh start

Do you have any other creditors on top of the mortgage shortfall and secured loan?

One of our old bank accounts is closed but was with an outstanding balance of £550, but that is the only other creditor.
