We had this last year and it cost £175 to kit my son out for school, 2 weeks later it was his birthday so we had terrible trouble trying to raise the funds. We did lots of boot sales with items donated from my parents to sell. The Christmas before my husband got up at 5am everyday to take someone to the station for work and earnt £2 a day, just so we could buy the children some presents. I have cleaned friends houses and looked after children for a few extra quid just to pay for the kids things. There is no way any income and expenditure amounts in an IVA cover bringing up young children, maybe ten years ago!

I'm so thankful mine doesn't need that anymore!!

We used to buy the sweatshirts with the logo from the school and that was it - everything else was from either Asda or Tesco.

I recall, in my senior school days, we needed sports wear in plain, house colours and school colours. this was a set for gym and set that doubled up for rugby and football (unless we played for the school tean, in which case we had to have kosher football and rugger wear in school colours). Then, of course, there was cricket !!!!! I didn't appreciate it at the time, but my parents must have been selling their spare organs!!!!

its a big cost and worry. I'm hoping to get abit more wear out of the some of the items, but they just grow sooo fast :( Its a good idea about adding it to our i/e. I wonder if you could just add it to the general clothing allowance?

I had to have a white shirt, a school tie (blue, black and white striped), a gymslip for the first two years and then I could have a pleated skirt after that. A navy blue cardigan, either a mackintosh or a duffle coat, a beret with the school badge, white socks and plain shoes and that was just for the winter!

For the summer it was a pale blue dress (shed loads of material in the skirt!!) and a blazer. I never did the blazer as my parents couldn't afford it.

It was either a satchel or a briefcase for the books.

In my proposal I have £450 for childcare and the IP put a side note atating that, when little Foggy starts school, this will be offset by, in part, the loss of child care credits and the balance will be used up, over the year, covering the cost of uniform, meals, after school and holiday care.

I have calculated most things out and, if they stick to the letter of the proposal I would be about £40 - £50 better off .... however I am sure there are other school things that will eat that easily.

I went to an all boys school, so was deprived of the delight of girls running around the gym in shorts (however, I do remember those iron clad navy knickers they used to wear in junior school !!! )

foggy you can be sure there will be many things to take up the £40-£50 you will have left.
this month alone there has been an end of term trip, camping stuff for D of E award, and books for next years GCSE science, as its a new syllabus next year the school does not have books to go around. in total about £160 pounds.

We used to have to wear bottle green woolly knickers that came right up to your armpits, and our 2ns X1 hockey team strip comprised of red and black tartan pleated skirt, red socks and a shocking pink shirt. I kid you not - thankfully I played 1st X1!

I think navy blue is better than bottle green! I was never good enough to play hockey for the school!

I like bottle green. Maybe not in the form of very big woolly knickers though. They must have been hot.
