Had it happen to me, someone tried to spend £1200 in Bradford on my debit card. I've never been to Bradford in my life, the bank called me about this unusual transaction as I have no overdraft on the account, this happened whilst in my iva, it got flagged as that money was not in the account, and the fraudster entered an incorrect pin number.

The card was stopped in the end and was replaced by the bank.

I know it's not regarding chip and pin, but I had to contact the bank(co-op) recently to ask if we could use the Electron when we go to Turkey soon. She told us we can BUT she would have to make notes of the dates or they wouldn't authorise the transactions and the card wouldn't work. I have always contacted the main card issuers when we've gone away but never the bank about our previous current account cards and have used them without any problem.......
It's nice to be back......

It was the co-op that I was with and they stopped those ridiculous transactions from going through. I guess if someone suddenly started using your card in Turkey it would be flagged up as possible fraud?

Smaller back street petrol stations have a higher rate of card cloning. I have been advised by a reliable source to try and pay cash in these outlets. [;)]

In the city I used to work, there was a petrol station banned from debt/credit cards, they were not allowed a cash machine either.. Hmmm now I know why.

I was reading the other day that by 2011 all petrol stations in the UK will be prepay, meaning that you will have to swipe a card before you fill up. Great for those of us without credit cards! Apparently it's been like this in the States for years, and someone commented that they authorise a set amount, often $100 dollars before you start to fill up. This then takes a while to be available on the card again.

Looks like I will be walking then, skip. What about a debit card? I do that now in Tescos, I mean swipe it and it lets me have around £20, like that goes anywhere.

Me too Lily!

I presume a debit card will be ok, but I hope Electron is accepted everywhere by then.

I know what you mean about £20 not going anywhere - I put £25 of petrol in earlier this week and got half a tank. When I got my last car a few years ago £35 filled it up easily!

The Adsa petrol station near us is automated prepay and it won't let our debit card have more than £20 petrol???

Don't get it at all ???[?]

I would not trust any of the petrol station with my card details, I'm led to believe this is where a high level of cloning takes place.

I seem to remember a programme on TV about this, apparently it is possible with some engines, but you end up smelling like fish and chips
