My hubby phoned me last night from the train station on his way back from work, freaking out because he'd tried to get cash from the cashpoint and it said we were £90 in debit... so he couldn't pay for his ticket home. Online it said we had £200 credit, as it also did on telephone banking. He'd gone into Co-op bank and the unhelpful assistant said he could see there was a held transaction (hubby thought it had something to do with Asda taking a duplicate payment as the figures added up about right) but couldn't tell him what it was or do anything about it - "do you expect me to walk home from Manchester" he said "umm yeah". Nice!!! He took all his effort not to punch a hole in a wall he was that stressed out at this point. So I phoned up Co-op and spoke to a lovely lady - it transpires that when I placed an Asda delivery last week, they debited the actual amount, but 'held' the original amount (there were item subs hence the difference in price) and this only affected the account from yesterday. Fortunately the lady on the phone was well aware of Asda's attitude to this (they say it stays there for 10 days and tough luck!!!!) and she said she could delete it off our account immediately - so my husband was able to get the train. I have never heard anything like it before - they effectively take a double payment and hold your money, stopping you from paying your other bills and essentials. Disgraceful! Anyway, I asked the lady if Sainsburys or Tesco do the same, she said they rarely have probs with them - so I know who I'll be shopping with from now on!!!
Another reason to add to the list of why I don't do online shopping!!

I think it only applies to some accounts, cashminder being one of them. Which is quite disgusting considering most people with that sort of account don't have tons of surplus cash sitting around to allow for double payments! Thank goodness I spoke to someone who knew what they were doing, I could have jumped down the phone and hugged her ha ha!
You were lucky that CO-OP unblocked the payment for you. When Asda did this to us CO-OP said that Asda would have to unblock the payment & inspite of lots of phonecalls to both Asda & CO-OP we were left skint for a week before pay day. I complained to Asda about this ridiculous pratice and they were completely uninterested, I have not shopped with Asda since. We have been using Sainsburys for months now and the food is of better quality and our shop costs around the same as it did before, Sainsburys do not ring fence money and only charge for the basket of shopping once.
It's been a long road getting from there to here but it's been worth it!
I am soooo glad I read this. I was only saying to Mrs F last night that we should consider getting shopping from ASDA delievred. We have been experimenting with getting the weekly shop from there, using the 10% cheaper guarantee thingy they are running, and found it was cheaper!
I did have a similar problem with co-op when our son's nursery accidentally charged us twice, which cost us one strike on our account and a bounced payment charge. Co-Op said there was nothing they could do to free the extra payment from the system and the nursery had to reverse it. Luckily the nursery also paid us the bank charge, as it was their error!
But ........ no ASDA online for us, now !!

I can't justify paying the delivery charge for home delivery for one thing, and I prefer to go and pick things myself, especially fresh fruit and veg.
We've just done our weekly shop from there.
Still not managed to get any money back on the 10% thing though as they always work out cheaper!!

I had a free delivery code and as we had run totally dry in the kitchen, I wanted to get the shopping hassle free without dragging the kids around for 3 hours and finding we had gone over budget at checkout. And avoiding impulse buys! I love our local Morrisons, get loads of reduced items from there but they don't do home deliveries - yet! Anyway a lesson learned and we will be printing off our Asda shopping lists from now on - and using them when we go around Morrisons!!! [:D][:D]
I used to do a virtual shop before doing the real thing - that way I'd find out what was cheapest and visit each shop accordingly.
Nowadays it is Asda (discount as daughter works there) and if they haven't got what I want then I call in to Tesco.
Not fussed on Morrisons at all and do not like Aldi or Lidl.

I love Morrisons too - my current favourite supermarket. Quality, choice is excellent and good value for money. Shocked to hear about Asda and their practice earmarking funds. I notice that this happens with Hotels as well. When my hubby checkis in they swipe his card and approx £100 is earmarked and then when he checks out the actual amount of the bill is taken but the original amount earmarked stays on our account for about 3 working days. Don't like or agree with this practice x
I shop at Sainsburys as it's the closest supermarket to us. I don't seem to be spending a lot more than I did when I shopped at Tesco and I'm collecting load of Nectar points!
My nearest Tesco is half a mile walk away so certainly couldn't justify spending a fiver on delivery. Asda is a couple of miles drive and I like to choose fresh stuff. I don't buy meat from there either.
