Thank you all so much for your kimd, empathetic words. I am very pleased I found this forum - not only for the lovely people in the same boat as me, but also for the supportive professional advice (big thank you to Tina and Michael for the kind words).

dont feel ashamed, you have taken a very important step, you should feel proud and hold your head up. Tina made a good point earlier in this thread that there are many people out there who look like they are doing fine but in reality are in a bigger mess than you can imagine. Tina is spot on many people are like swans (God knows most of us on here have been there) calm on the surface but paddling like hell underneath just to stay afloat. Having been through the whole process from beginning to end (and my mess was enormous) you will emerge out the other side, stronger, happier and most of all debt free and at that point you will start to notice just how much everyone around you is struggling with debt... they will do things you did.... say things you said and so on, and instead of judging them you will feel you want to help them in some way.
Good luck and keep us posted on how it all goes.

Don't ever feel ashamed! How do you know all the people you chat to on a day to day basis aren't also in an IVA/DMP or bankrupt?
I have been open and honest about our situation and have found others also have been and we can chat about it all together.
I hold my head up high as I know I am sorting it but no way would I share it with anyone other than my kids and stepkids.
