Br advertised in local paper - worried :-(

Hi, All

I have on my own debt been Br 4 days now, and coming to terms of whats happened. I am 34 and wife 26 and we are married and it seemed the right option.
I have a positive outlook on the future now and determined to make things work.
The only worry is the advert in our local paper after you are br, I know it was going to happen as I called my Or today and he confirmed it would be next thursdays local paper. We have kept my Br to ourselves and my wife is worried of her parents finding out as they sometimes get this local paper and would definetly not approve also possibly snub my wife who loves them very much. Has anyone had any acknowlegements from family or friends after it been advertised havent known. I cant see everday people looking at them in paper. Also is the advert large or small and with many others.

Appreciate any advice, this is our only worry now after many others.

I have been BR for about 5 weeks now, and no body is any the wiser. It only appears in those small boxes under some like announcements or similar in the back, I think you would be very unlucky for anyone to notice, who reads those things any way?

I have been BR for 39 days now - was dreading the fact that my name was to appear in the paper. I have extremely nosy neighbours, they swap newspapers everyday!!!! - yes they do!!!! and I was convinced they would see it. However, I am moving out of my home at the end of this month and out of common decency and because he was so kind to me when I moved in here, I went over and explained that I had gone BR and was moving out. Well, I could have knocked him over with a feather as he had no idea - and he has now been over here 4 times in 24 Hours offering all sorts of advice!!!

So my guess is that he did not see it and if any of the others did, I can assure you, they would have been round to him to tell him!

Good luck and perhaps they won't see it unless they are looking at the hatch, match and dispatch columns - or they are interested in Tenders!!!

Quite frankly I don't think many people read these, but there's always the chnce they could.

Why not tell them and ask for their support and understanding.

I have always been extrememly open about my IVA and feel that by my being open I have helped others look closer at their own debt.

I know the pressure you must be feeling, but maybe its concern for no reason?

Surely your in laws dn't want to lose contact with you both?

Whatever you decide, I wish you luck.

Neild300 ..go round to your wifes parents local shop and buy up all the papers on the day your advert is in...or pop round to the inlaws house and steal the paper before they read it!!! )

I have been bankrupt now for over 2 months, I have bought the local paper every week but have not been in it! I think we have been overlooked[:D]

The BR notices are in amongst the personal ads in my local paper so if anyone had said anything I was going to ask them what they were doing looking there!

Seriously the advert was so small it took me a while to find it, but when I did I cut it out and kept it!

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

They are usually advertised once a month in most regional newspapers, so be prepared to be included with the other 50 or so other applicants that month Neil.

Hi Neil, I was worried too as no-one knew about my BR - even thought of changing my name!!! My notice appeared a week after my BR and as Melanie says I was one of about 50 printed that day, the notice was tiny but seeing it in black and white was a bit of a shock!! Only one person has mentioned it so far, even though others have probably seen it. But at the end of the day I don't care - the relief I feel having dealt with my financial nightmare far outweighs a tiny little ad!!! Could you not tell your wife's parents in advance?? I'm sure they would be understanding - a lot of posters have been in the same boat as yourself and have been pleasantly surprised by their loved ones responses. But if you really can't tell them - then just tough it out. Just see it as another little hurdle to overcome on your way to your debt free future.

Thanks for advice and reassurance, like melanie says if there all bundled together once a month I might not stand out. But I can see why anyone would look at them, the only people who I`d thought look would be bankrupts and creditors.

Here's one possibility that you and your wife need to consider.

What would hurt your parent's in law worse.

Finding out from you and your wife in private, where you can sit down and discuss it.

Or reading the local paper and finding out that their own daughter didn't trust them enough to tell them.

It's a harsh thing to think about, but I think you need to consider it.

Yes, at the end of the day it really has nothing to do with them. But parents rarely think that way. Think it's a hard habit to get out of after years of taking care of their child.

If it were me, I'd bite the bullet and tell them. If you're worried about their reaction, meet in the local pub or something, where they will have to dampen down their reaction.

They may overreact and there may be some bridges to build at the end of it. But as long as you know you've done right by them, and keep the lines of communication open for when they've calmed down enough to give you the support you need, then at least that will be some comfort to you during the difficult times.
