BR & Jobs!

My husband is currently applying to be an Air Traffic Control trainee. If he is offered the job he would need to have security clearance, and one would assume that National Air Traffic Services will do a credit check as part of this process?

Does anyone know if we were bankrupt if this would make his application fall apart in regards to getting a security clearance, or if we should wait until these checks are done first and then apply for BR ? It's a long shot that he will get offered the position, but it is his dream career and we don't want to jump the gun into BR if it is the best solution and end up destroying his chances!

I can't see that it will be a problem but can't give you a difinitive answer,it will depend on the employer.Hopefully Melanie or Catullus,our IPs,will be able to put your mind at rest

The employer would be National Air Traffic Services, and while they are a private company, as he would be dealing with something of 'national security' we were worried it might disqualify him.

Of course being BR doesn't mean he can't tell planes where to fly, but obviously they may think he makes bad decisions that get him in financial problems, so he may make bad decisions for them.... For the record it is our failed post office/convenience store that has caused us to end up with the problems we have had and not irresponsible personal spending debts.

I should add the Government owns 49% of 'NATS', and I thought I read somewhere that being BR stops you working for anyone that has Government links?

I don't really know the answer, but I have clients who work at GCHQ who would lose their posiitons in bankruptcy, but not in IVA, so I suppose this may be something similar. Can you not question NATS on an anonymous basis, or I would be happy to do this for you if you want to e-mail me the telephone number of their personnel department.

If we held off the BR until after the security clearance was granted, would the OR automatically notify NATS of our BR...?

Would your clients at GCHQ be disqualified if they applied for their jobs after they had their BR discharged?

I think GCHQ would still have some issues with discharge bankrupts, but they are a very special organisation and rightly have to have a strict recruitment policy as the nations security is at risk. There may be a different policy within your husband's organisation.

The OR will not notify NATS of your husband's bankruptcy, if he waits until his security clearance has been granted, but he will need to check his organisations own rules to see whether this is prohibitive.

May I say how I admire his choice of career - I cannot think of a more pressurised job!

Some general stuff
types of clearance
1) basic C - no record of child abuse etc
teachers/ social workers / anyone
working with children
Then it gets to be more fun

Counter Terrorist Check (CTC) is required for people who will be working in close proximity to public figures, or who will have access to information or material vulnerable to terrorist attack, or whose work involves unrestricted access to certain government or commercial establishments. A CTC does not allow access to, or knowledge or custody, of protectively marked assets and information.

Security Check (SC) is for people who will have substantial access to SECRET assets or occasional access to TOP SECRET assets and information.

Developed Vetting (DV) is the highest level of clearance produced by the the Agency and is required for people who will have substantial unsupervised access to TOP SECRET assets, or for working in or with the intelligence and security agencies.

Im SC cleared in my job -- I work for the Police as an IT specialist , in the force that I work for no financial checks are made at SC level - but that varys from force to force .
DV level is always credit checked .
DV is generally checked every 3 years.

Iam BR and checked with my vetting people before I went BR, I was in the job 2 yrs before going BR.

I would say check with NATS and see what they say - the odds are it will be a CTC check rather than SC or DV .
