If i am in an IVA but would like to apply for a current basic account, can anyone recommend an account? Natwest turned me down as it comes up with bankruptcy!

I recommend thinkbanking as they wilol accept anyone and the ac can be opened over the phone. they do charge 12.50 a month for the account but you can get no charges and there is a debit maestro card also. You get two accounts a and b a account is wshere your salary goes in and they keep all your dd payments aside and transfer the rest to your b ac rthis means what is in this account is yours and you know where you are.thinkbanking.co.uk have a look at the managed account.

Hope that helps

Ang

I think this is so unfair...your not asking for an overdraft...credit card or anything...just a basic account for wages and things to be paid INTO....and they refuse. I did ring and ask Barclays if i could have a basic current account and told them i was in a IVA and they said fine...might be worth a ring. x

We have a current account with abbey which we had pre IVA but have opened up a savings account with them since starting with no probems.

Why spend life worrying...when you can spend it smiling!!

I also recommend Co Op Cash minder a/c. No charges and it comes with a Visa electron card. I suggest you give themn a call but you must ensure that you have sufficient funds at the end of the month as they will ask you questions about your income and expenditure.

Halifax also have an easy cash a/c as well again it comes with a Visa electron card.

I also have a cash plus mastercard which is a front loaded credit card. There is an initial fee of £10 and a £4.99 monthly charge but I do need one so I don't mind paying for it!

Good Luck

Hi Jandc,

You could also try Halifax Easy Cash account or Lloyds Cash account, just remember that the new basic bank account has to be with a lender you dont owe money to.

Also I think it is easier if you personally go into the branch and organise an account. Then you can explain your situatiuon in person.

I would recommend the Co-op account as well.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

Hi-My IVAstarted last week - the Smile account (Co-op) accepted us for their basic account - you get a cheque book and visa debit card - it came with a overdraft of £500 but by sendinga secure email you can have this facility removed with noquestions asked.
Also Halifax basic account a good option!

Hi
I think that you will be unlikely to get this account if you are already in an IVA.Lizzie got hers prior to an IVA and that is the secret, change your account prior to an IVA.

The smile account is NOT a BASIC BANK account...check out site. There is nothing basic about this.

You get a visa debit card and not just a visa electron card....that is not a basic Bank account issue.

To have this account....you have to open it before the IVA....and they can close it down as it is not standard bank account. But how would they know?

I too have te smile account . I cancelled the overdraft straight away but the cheque book and visa debit are lifesavers. I opened mine before my iva but tried to get a savings account with them after iva started and was refused , but ive had no probs keeping my current account w3ith them. I have a Barclays account to , opened after iva started and they were a creditor!! no cheque book and just cash card but it helps to have a high st bank as smile is juat internet
