Hi All.
First I hope this is the correct place to post this type of question.

I'm currently in a VIA with Freeman Jones, and I wondered if I am able to have a baby whilst in an IVA? The IVA started in Sep.

Many Thanks!
Tammy

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

Yes, it is possible to have babies in a IVA. Obviously it may impact on your IVA, but a good IP will usually sort you out a payment break whilst you are on maternity leave.

hey tammy welcome here.

the answer is yes. being in an iva does not mean putting your life on hold. what you will have to do is speak to your ip and let them know so they can do a revised income and expenditure for you to include baby expenses. please post if you need anymore help and welcome x [:)]

Of course this is entirely possible - and happens a lot. Your budget may be effected, but the IVA can be varied to accomodated increased expenditure as a result of the happy event.

Of course you can. We have a budget baby and she is a wonderful addition to our lives. All you have to do is set out some ground rules before you start. We worked out that nappies would cost £5 a week so we payed £280 for a pack that are washable preformed nappies and these will keep her till she is potty trained.so a big saving there. Then we shop at matalan and can get six months clothes for her at about £50. The biggest saving was that for six months she was purely breastfed and now she eats all fresh food that we have in our weekly food bill and considering that a baby needs a balanced intake of food it means that our weekly food bill only went up by £5 per week. So a little planning and a bit of help from family for a cot and buggy and you really can enjoy having a little crazy person join your life. Hope this helps and get practicing !!! x

I agree - this should give much engouragement to young couples who are thinking of starting a family but worried about the costs. I say to all my clients "Never put your lives on hold for the sake of the IVA!" and it does seem to work.

What a disgraceful and unhelpful comment. You should have reported this member of staff and they should have been severely reprimanded by the IP who is acting for you.

I would never employ staff who had that sort of attitude to our clients. Who on earth does he think actually pays his wages?

I completely agree with Melanie - your life should not be put on hold in a IVA.
Looking ahead if this is your first child you will get additional help from receiving Child Benefit, then their is Child Tax Credits.
With Child tax credits you get a higher rate for the first year from a child being born, to help with costs of nappies, baby milk etc.
If you already have children then you will get extra for a new baby arriving & again a higher rate for the first year from birth. You also get a increase in child benefit- but only a small amount (based on the idea that each additional child costs less!!)
All of this would have to be done with a new I&E but most firms are supportive & understanding.

Orange - that response from your IVA company (employee) was just awful & def not needed. Most pregnancys are a suprise to anyone trying & not trying.
There is never a good time to have a baby, planned or not planned - they cost a fortune!
Final IVA payment made in April 2013, never ever thought we could do it or get through it but we did! X

Hi Tammy,

I totally agree with the others, don't let an IVA stand in the way of a precious gift.

I think its probably easier to bring up baby on a budget now, than a few years ago. With ebay and the like there are plenty of nearly new items at bargain prices to be found. Also charity shops have loads of great things.

Good luck and enjoy xx

Hi All,
Thanks for your kind comments, it’s been a big help.
We already have one 24 month year old, just after the IVA was approved my husband called Freeman Jones asking what would happen in theory if we had another one… They said that it could put the IVA in jeopardy if our payments had to change (not that I think they would), they also said about an ‘accidental pregnancy’… umm odd.
They recommended we should not have a baby in an IVA… Husband went mad.
But like you all say, you can’t put your life on hold because of an IVA.
Thanks!
Tammy.
