can I rent elsewhere as agents do a credit search

You are correct some lettings agents do require a credit search on all potential renters. In my experience this is not usually too much of a barrier. The best thing to do is be upfront and honest about your credit file and maybe even offer a bigger deposit as a good will gesture.
