12 Months ago I moved to France. I have a part time job which will cease in March when I will be 70 years old. Stupidly I have run up debts on various cards totalling approx £81,000. I bank with Barclays and I have approached my Bank in England who suggested I contact Barclays France. Yesterday my proposal to try and borrow the money to pay off my debts was refused. Can you help me although I live in France?

Hi brian

I already have a couple of clients who live in France, but I think it would be difficult for you to propose an IVA unless you have a permanent UK living address.

Lending to repay unsecured debts is particularly difficult in France, as the French are not great borrowers and French banks are generally more cautious than their British counterparts.

Given your age, and lack of income, I think that bankruptcy proceedings are probably your best option, however this could be tricky for you if you own a property with equity. What assets do you have, and how much do you think they are worth?
