Well the title sums it up,my car just blew up[:0]. Warning light came on whilst I was doing 70mph on the motorway,I pulled off onto a side street, left the engine running while I checked what the warning lamp was, next thing the engine was at 7,000rpm(without me touching the pedal),its a renault laguna so I pulled the key card out after pressing the stop button(engine DIDNT turn off)and the car instantly filled up with white smoke[:0]. I told my son to jump out and as soon as he was clear I tried to stall the engine, which I managed on the 2nd attempt.

The RAC man says the turbo is dead[:(][:(!] and possibly the engine as well, depending on how fast I was at stalling the engine.

Never mind the cost, let this be a lesson to all. If your car ever revs on its own and wont turn off(even a normal car with an ignition key being removed wont stop the engine),you must select 5th gear and dump the clutch, with your foot on the brake and the handbrake on too, to stall the engine to prevent the whole engine getting even more cream crackered!!!

I will phone my IP tomorrow and ask if I can borrow his Merc while I save up to get mine fixed(although the car is possible worth less than the repair bill will be).

I am just glad me and my boy got out the car without injury!!![:)]

I have looked on a few renault forums and this seems to be a common thing so will be contacting trading standards and renault to see what they say!!

Will keep you all posted!

No luck with your car!

One of my friends had the same issue with his Renault. The oil leaks in to the Turbo and is heated enough to fuel the car. It's enough to power the car in to a potential crash.

One thing to consider before giving up on it is to get a diesel compression test. This should confirm the engine is (hopefully) worth saving. The main reason for these failues is a failed seal so you may not need to change the Turbo.

Hopefully you get up and running soon with little cost.

Cheers

Andy

I am just glad we got out the car and that I had the sens to nurse it off the motorway coz if the turbo had blown on the motroway it would have caused a crash without doubt!!

Letter to VOSA in the morning!!

If there have been a lot of incidences of this happening surely Renault should arrange a recall? My Vauxhall Corsa was recalled twice, the second time because a few of them spontaneously combusted which was a bit unnerving to know! At least Vauxhall did it though.

How old is the car?

PD the main thing is that you both got out ok. As for the solution I would imagine the IP will be more eager to help with the payment break than lending his merc. I just hope you managed to get something sorted without too much hassle.

Renault were repairing faulty turbos on cars up to 5 years old(mine is an 03 plate so just too old),that had less than 99000 miles(mine has just 68ooo).

Think I may be peeing in the wind to get renault to help foot the bill.

OMG - I would have no clue as to what to do if this happened to me. Is it some sort of male instinct in you guys which tells you what to do in times of crisis? I would have just jumped out and phoned hubby - the other day he had to speak to me step by step over the phone to tell me how to put oil in!

Seriously Paul, just glad to hear that you are both OK. Your IP will be sure to help with sorting out the repair work even if it means a missed payment or two. Concerning to hear this about Renault cars though.

I wouldn't know either Melanie. I remember telling Dave I thought I had a flat tyre and he asked me was it just flat at the bottom or all the way round. I actually went and looked at the tyre before realising he was winding me up!
