Hello folks,

Just beware on 2 fronts - went to renew my car insurance and as my same premium had shot up from £350 to £500 (over 30%!) - I decided to shop around and it appears that all insurance companies do a CREDIT CHECK prior to the quote!. Some I turned down when asked as I knew the IVA would show but on the last firm I rang I let them do it and it didn't affect things as they offered me the insurance and even on installments.

So, when they mention credit check - don't panic as I have since been informed that the insurance companies do a lower level to confirm identity and any fraud issues and don't look into financial information?.

My premium has still shot up though! .....can any of the experts advise of CCCS guidelines for car insurance??...[?]

I've left mine as it is this year as other quotes were much more expensive so I've not had a problem.

I know they used to check your credit file just to make sure your details were correct. I used to panic when I saw all the searches on my record but apparantly they don't show up if anyone checks you for a loan or anything like that.

I've no idea about CCCS guidelines - I would think that you can claim for what you pay. You can't help it if the insurance is a lot, and for people living in certain postcodes it's going to be astronomical and you have to pay it.

Hi all - I had my renewal this week and challenged the quote as it was significantly higher than previous. I did a compare the market quote and it came up with lots of cheaper options - I spoke to two companies and both have recorded checks on my credit file and they are appearing on my experian record - so maybe it is dependant on the company !
When I spoke to experian last week they said that your credit file appears fine to lenders as long as it shows up for things like utility bills, car insurance etc - it is when it shows numerous requests for loan applications etc etc.
Definately worth checking for a different insurer - i saved £60 !

I went on to the CCCS website the other day and it was interesting reading. It gave all the guidelines from 2009-2010 and then a new table with the VAT increase. The one thing I cant find is car insurance. Worth a look though.

Think of a certain mustashioed singer advert and go to their website. I saved £100 and no problems paying monthly. But don't tell Melanie! ;)

I think it all depends on who you look at. I've not changed mine but do know of posters who have had problems.

My pet insurance was taken out online last year with Sainsburys and accepted straight away for monthly payments. No credit check at all.

I am insuring a car soon and Diamond is a good one for the girls. Their quote system screens out people they won't let pay monthly. So if you are allowed a monthly quote (as I was) there are no more hurdles to jump through.

They were also 50% cost of most other quotes.

I will be paying £80 per month for my insurance - if my IP has a problem and can find me cheaper insurance I will be delighted. Otherwise, its tough luck on both me and my creditors as we both lose out on getting our mitts on some of my payrise! I would much rather lower insurance, pay some to creditors and have a bit of extra DI!!

I actually find them quite expensive, as did my daughter. She found Direct Line to be the cheapest although they quoted twice my renewal price this year.

Isn't it funny how insurance companies differ. I guess it's down to the weightings they give to different criteria.

Diamond must give less weighting to postcode than a lot of insurers so are good for me. However, if you live in a nice area, this will work against you.

Lucky we have al the comparrison sites now! Imagine the time we'd all waste otherwise.

It is all to do with postcodes I think but I live in a very low crime area and couldn't believe what Diamond and Direct Line wanted to charge!

I never use the comparison sites, prefer to go direct to the insurers even if it does take a while. This year I just did two and they couldn't beat my £193 quote for fully comp so I left it as it was.

To be honest, even if Direct Line weren't the cheapest (within reason) I would stay with them, purely based on the fact that, some years ago, when someone ran into me (head on, my side of the road), I couldn't fault the service I got. As it happens, they are about the cheapest I have found, and they have just renewed on monthly payments with no issues :-)

They have been the cheapest for the daughter but they quoted me over £400 and the benefits weren't anywhere near as good as I am getting.

I am sure there is an element of luck involved in the quotes you get, too. For instance, they quote you, say, £400 and you say no thanks I can get it from Churchill for £300. So they come back and "after some re-jigging" find that, lo and behold, they can match that! Why, then, didn't they offer £300 first time round ??? Sometimes they chance their hand, as it often pays off!!!

It does sometimes but I think just under £200 for fully comp, no windscreen excess and only £75 normal excess is hard to beat.

I had a massive quote in august last year for my renewal nearly twice what i was paying before, as i really don't want to go through all the credit checks and i can't afford the upfront payment i argued with the insurance company, got my quote back down to normal figures and if i remember rightly £5 a month less!
