I don`t have kids and my partner and I don`t exchange gifts at Christmas, so I don`t have this particular problem to confront. I do have two nephews and a niece and we buy presents for our closest friend`s two children, and this year we won`t be able to spend anything like we normally do on them.
We haven`t told our families or friends of our financial situation, so we may get puzzled looks on Christmas Day I guess, as our gifts to everyone won`t be as generous as they were.

Hi Random Lady. I dont know if this will help but I make Dolly bags as gifts for some of my friends and family then I put in a nice smelly or some chocs. I have a few left over and would be delighted to send you a couple to help out.

That's a nice gesture Carole.

Whilst I am single and only have 7 family presents to buy, I used to spend an absolute fortune (my winter fuel allowance[8D]). Since I had my F and F accepted and then promptly retired and now live on pensions and really need to be frugal.I have limited them all to £10 each and told them they will neither get nor do I want to receive extravagent presents. It sounded really hard but a couple of them have already said that Christmas is getting out of hand and we should all consider doing the same.

We have cut down as much as we can on presents. It doesn't help that we have mine, hubbys and stepsons birthdays all in December, plus a new addition is due to appear either late this month or early next month so that's more expense.

see if you could reduce your payments for broadband, sky, mobile phones etc.I contacted all these companies and even though i am still only part way through each contract was allowed to change plans with them-saving a fair few quid-i even admitted to being in iva-i have been a good customer to these companies for years and they really dont want to lose you.Check and see if you have any credit on your gas/electric accounts-i tend to leave mine in until christmas. My son is always wanting new playstation or xbox games so he either takes old ones to trade at the shops or swaps with friends. He also loves having a car boot before christmas to clear all his old toys out and what we make goes towards his christmas presents(he is only 8 but does understand money is tight and enjoys bartering for his toys)this also helps him to understand the value of money-unlike his parents did!!!!!!!I also buy value brands at supermarkets now and spice them up a bit -also cooking fresh meals from scratch seems to save money-something i never did before iva-and get your coupons off the free sites on the web-i now proudly wind up the checkout girls with a handful of vouchers every week-my god if i had been like this years ago i wouldnt have the iva-ah well you live and learn.[:D]My son was always the kid at school who had all the latest gear and toys-we only have one-but because we have cutback in so many other areas i am sure he wont feel left out-and he understands things have changed this year and for the future.

There was some woman on tv a while ago yakking on about xmas and pressies . she said when ur kids write their xmas lists tell them they can only have 1 item off thier list as santa has to buy for so many kids ..... then go to poundland and buy loads of bits as all kids are interested in are opening presents. the amount of pressies is more important to them .... so then i sat thinking , my 7 yr old last xmas , ripping open pressies and chucking it to one side whilst opening another !! its defo the amount of pressies for them.

this year , they started writing lists aout 3 weeks ago , i told them that father xmas had rung and said they could only put 6 items on a list as there are so many other kids to buy for in the world ... So my mum has bought 1 item off each list, my eldest son has bought another, the other set of grandparnets will buy another .... i have kept the cheapest stuff on the list for me to buy ......crafty i know but needs must . My kids are 5, 6 8 &18. one item my 5 yr old is desperate for has been bought by my mum , and i said to my husband ok she may be disappointed that santa hasnt left it but she will be chuffed when granma turns up with it in the morning.although i know my mum would be happy to leave it here , but why should the fat gezza get the credit !!??? my 5yr old after the afore mention item ... ben and hollys magic kingdom playset ... seems to be a big seller and i have only just managed to get one as sold out everywhere, £29.99 have seen them hit £50 on ebay recently!!! tempting for a profit! It has been known for a male friend to be ringing the house to speak to kids to say hes very sorry but cant get certain gifts .... only good if ur kids believe like mine do !
i know how poster feels thou with all these games consoles, my son in the army let his 6 yr brother borrow the xbox 360 he bought , but hes just had a ps3 free on a phone contract and let me 6 yr old keep xbox. He wants games for it , so they will be purchased off ebay !
i keep thinking to myself this is the last xmas in the iva , as yr 6 is complete nxt autumn . i have been buying 1 gift a week . then i buy a food item , like this week it was chocs for xmas tree, BOGOF of course and put them away. Morrisons are selling pepsi buy 1 get 2 free , so stocking up on pop and same with pringles ! I do xmas now on a budget, if extras for dinner (like in laws ....not bloomin likely after last yr) i ask them to buy something , like my mum will be coming , so she can buy the turkey or puddings, or both !! i buy a xmas item every week with shopping . iceland do great puds and very reasonably priced . I dont miss £3.00 on my shopping bill.
BUT best of all is january , ok no cash for the sales but no dirty big visa bills to pay at the end either !
society has changed so much that kids wouldnt appreciate a shiney penny and orange in their stocking ..... now its £250 games consoles with games at £40 each ! or some crappy plastic item £35 that gets broke as soon as taken out of box . I have learnt thou , keep boxes and beginning of jan, sell item on ebay as kids no longer play with it !
oh well after all that waffle i hope everyone does have a lovely xmas and those with young kids who believe, get a few things they ask for ! xxx

Love the post Molly16 it gave me a giggle.

I was having a really bad day when I posted that and think you've seen my other post about the rather small food allowance we have (which hopefully Declan will be able to look into for me. Think things have been getting on top of me but I've got a house, a job and lovely kids so I'm no that bad off!!

Even with the stress of all the phone calls and letters now long gone, things do still worry me, especially when I've £5 left in the food kitty and don't get paid until 30th arghh!!!!

I'll get through though, you have to for the kids if nothing else. They will get some little gifts on Christmas Day (nothing like what they have had in the past) but we have got some cheap stuff from Poundland for the younger one and some cheap make up bits for the older girl. They'll get a nice meal on Christmas Day and even though it's just me, hubby and the kids we will enjoy having a fun day. You can't beat family fun - defo to bring a smile to your face.

Hope everyone out there has a fab Christmas and like you say Molly16, no nasty credit card bills to look forward to in Jan ha ha!!

I had a brainwave this week (doesn't happen often [:I])...took an empty paper box (you know the ones that 5 reams of paper come in), covered it in wrapping paper and I've filled it with pencils, books etc from cheap shops... homemade treasure chest!!

Knowing my 2 grandaughters, this will give them more fun than any expensive "in toy".

My parents always come to stay for Christmas and give us £50 towards the food and drink so that comes in handy!

It's double discount day for the staff at Asda on Tuesday so 20% off - will be doing some stocking up!
