I broke down one Christmas Eve on the outskirts of Birmingham City Centre on a very lonely car park once the office workers had gone home. I worked a few yards away and the RAC had to pass where I worked but they refused to pick me up. I sat with the car for two hours, then went back to the office (pre mobile phones this!) and phoned again and was told that the patrol man had been but I'd gone! Needless to say I gave them short shrift and they were out within 30 minutes and I was sorted.
With the AA, I have been followed home to make sure I made it ok, I've been walking back to the car from the emergency phone on the motorway and seen the patrol pull up behind me, I've been picked up from my office block and taken back to the car.
They may not be the cheapest in the world but I really rate them.
