Hi all

What do we do now,Co-op have refused us a current account with cheque book. I thought this would be the best one to go to as everyone is recommending them. Should we re-apply for the basic account or can you not do that?? We have only just started our IVA process, even though some creditors have called and according to credit experian it is only showing 1 late payment at the moment. Is it worth me calling the Co-op and explaining that we have started the IVA process and the Natwest who we are currently with with be closed??.
Thanks
Sam

Hi Sam,

The account that posters are on with is the basic account not a current account with CQ book, as a basic account does not credit check you. A current acount application is likely to credit score you as they will often give an overdraft with it - which you are allowed any form of credit during an IVA, so you dont want that account.
I Think you got refused due to co-op doing a credit check on you because of the style of account you applied for, n seeing your difficulties before the IVA starts.
BUT: re apply online or by phone for the "basic account" - you dont have to mention your IVA application - just distract them by saying how everyone recommends them!- there is no harm in trying & as for many posters it all comes through good.

Another good one whom accept no problems & no credit checks is Yorkshire Bank, though you do have to pop into a branch to open an account - I opened one with them - no problems.
You do get a basic account with online banking & a Maestro Card.

Hope this helps xxxx

Halifax and Yorkshire also do very basic bank accounts with a debit Card and internet banking if you have no joy.

Hi Sam, sorry to hear that the Coop has refused your application, I applied for mine before sending off all the paperwork for the IVA and had not missed a payment as such, was in a panic when nothing came back for over a week but it was accepted with chequebook, did you apply for the standard current account?

Hi to you all and thanks for the replies.
Yes I think you are right, they did credit score me, and now as the letters are coming in I guess our credit rating is dropping. I did decide to give them a call, and I spoke to a very nice person, who has authorised the basic account with not CB, but tha's fine, at least we have got a new account to start with.
Finding this forum very helpful and appreciate all off your comments.

Regards

Thanks Guys. It was something I asked if maybe we could upgrade in a year with a cheque book. Thing is it's only what we are used to by the ways of paying child-care and school clubs etc, just will adjust!!.

Thanks again

I cant remember how to write a cheque its been that long. You do adjust fairly quickly to an IVA life.

Hi, I applied online for a Lloyds TSB Classic account and although my credit score must have been shot, I was accepted.
I dont know if a credit check was carried out for certain, but its worth a try. You can apply online in just a few minutes.

I am really happy with Lloyds TSB, they know I am in an IVA and this has not caused any problems.

Good Luck!!

Just a little bit of a correction (sorry Lyns!)

You can't apply for the basic Cashminder account online, only over the phone or in a branch.

Glad you got sorted there Hammie, strange how things go, i took my partner into the CO-OP to open the cashminder account so that he could put money away every week (he's weekly paid) for the loan for his car so he knew exactly what was in there as he like many other people doesn't keep an eye on his account. They wouldn't agree to this as his credit rating is excellent and therefore he has the current account but as he didn't want to leave his current bank has no frills on this one, really strange how things work out.
Om shanti, namesté, good luck to all who are embarking on the IVA journey, it isn't always an easy one but the outcome is the best.

IVA COMPLETED August 2012, received Completion certificate 18.4.13.

Thanks Jan! & Sorry! Dont have a co-op bank branch here so thought it could be done online.

I too have a Lloyds TSB Silver account which we got when setting up an IVA - when they were trying to force us to have an overdraft, I told them of our IVA & they were completely fine with it. We got put onto the silver account because at the time they were getting rid of the basic one for new customers.

Hi
I am in the process of setting up an IVA and taking advice from the forum set up a standard current account with the Co-Op about a month ago (and very happy I am with it!)
This morning I tried to open a cashminder account and have been “referred” after they ran a credit check. Obviously the letters to my creditors are now filtering through!!
I was told that “95% of all applications are accepted and not to worry.
We shall see mmmmmm
