Hi
One or two of you might remember that i was made redundant last month and not had much luck since really.

Anyway i did some work for a company for 3 days a few weeks ago and hated every second of it and was long hours working for nothing. to be honest i worked the 3rd day which was a friday and never went back on the monday as i found some better agency work. I never told them i wasnt going back which i know was the wrong thing to do but its done now but the only thing is they were meant to pay me on friday and they havnt. It was a short term job while a guy was on sick. I phoned them but the person i needed to speak to wasnt there, [ apparantly]. Its not a huge amount, works out as £225 for the 3 days[ minus any tax etc] but its alot of money when you dont have any.

Is there anything i can do to get this money? Or will they just deny all knowledge of me ever being there?

Sorry for the long post.

Was it though an agency, if so why not contact them?

No it was a company directly. It was short term work, i think they wanted to avoid agencies just as much as i do

I don't know then, they should pay you though. You did the work - you should get paid.

I remember around 12 years ago, I took a job, it lasted a week and I walked out, straight into another job - best thing I did, it were horrible. They still paid me though.

They are obliged to pay you, but if they don't it will hardly be cost effective for you to pursue such a small amount - and you may be in breach of agreement for not turning up on the Monday or advising them that you were not going to in any case.

hi - trying to get help!

i was in a similar position to you a few years ago, started a job, worked 3 days, hated it and never went back! they did not pay me until i wrote a letter to them claiming i would take them to the small claims court to persue them for the money i was owed! hey presto! 2 days later i got a cheque in the post! dont know if it will work for you but it may be worth a try!

good luck

Hi thanks, i did wonder what sort of thing i could do. I will try that. Obviously i wouldnt take them to court because it would cost me too much im sure but will be worth a try. If it doesnt work then i guess i will just have to cut my loses.

Thanks for your help barb.

Its a lot of money when you haven't got much TTH. I would push for it like Barb says.

You could claim all the costs on top of your pay if you had to take it that far.

I would have to look into it but it shouldnt need to go that far. I cant see them been keen on getting dragged through the courts.

No I would not think you would need to even take it that far either.

I have used the small claims court successfully in the past for this very purpose, and it certainly wouldn't hurt to write a letter to that effect.

As for cost, yes it does cost money but I reproduce below from the relevant government website if that is any use to you.

For free legal information, help and advice contact Community Legal Service Direct on 0845 345 4345 or www.clsdirect.org.uk

How much will it cost and what if I cannot afford it?
The fee you will have to pay to the court will depend on the amount you are claiming, including interest.
You will have to pay a court fee unless:
• you receive Income Support
• you receive State Pension Guarantee Credit
• you receive income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
• you receive Working Tax Credit with no element of the Child Tax Credit. Court staff will explain this to you.
• your gross annual income does not exceed a specified limit. See booklet EX160A for more details.

Regards.
