well, all this sleaze and the state of the country has got even me looking up Conservative polices on the internet [:0] Did I really say, that[:0], I need to go and wash my eyes out with bleach! I hated M Thatcher and what a mess she made but it seems Labour are as bad or even worse [:(]
The problem with our democracy is that people are so gullible on the one hand and on the other it is (in my opinion) wrong to allow any one party too long in office.
What is needed is a system whereby no one party can continue to form the government for more than say 8 years and if things start to go wrong there should be some mechanism to kick them out.
Mandatory voting by all over the age of 18 would get a better result over the long term.
If you have a charismatic good looking leader who can articulate well - this is what the current electorate go for.
Hague was brilliant but too small in height and wrong face. Blair scored on all points - look at Obama - scores in everything. Brown well hard to describe other than a complete ar*e. Cameron - nearly scores on all points.
Any other suggestions?
The only way governments listen is when the common people protest at injustices - Thatcher lost out on the poll tax and Blair on the Petrol issue - Brown loses out on everything from taxing pensioners to refusing to say he is sorry.

One of my colleagues in the States would disagree with you about Obama David! From what he's been telling me a lot of his ideas seem to be similar to Brown and Blair, which doesn't bode well for the US.
It's a shame that people are so easily swayed by people's looks that it's a factor in who they vote for. They could look like Quasimodo for all I care, providing they can sort this mess out!
I have been labour for years but agree it's time for a change I will be voting for cameron at the next election. I would vote for the british national party if I thought it would change the result but it wont so it's wasted. I just hope cameron gets a policy regarding british jobs for british workers because this country is in a mess partly because of all the poles taking jobs. My friend got made redundant last week a good worker with no time off and a polish worker with less skill kept is job it makes me sick really needs to be some big changes in this country and start looking after ourselves before others.
The one thing you could say about Tony Blair was that he could think on his feet and come back with an answer 9 times out of 10 (whether it actually answered the question being asked is another matter!).
Gordon Brown just has nothing about him at all and when he can't come back with an answer then he starts to stutter.
I can't see us ever changing the way our country is run though, and as to whether mandatory voting would work, I just don't know. The ones who don't bother voting now are totally apathetic and really don't care who is in power - that would just carry over into their voting and who knows who might get in?
At least the people who do vote, do so because they want to have a say in who governs us, not because they are forced to pick someone.

Well how about a "fine" against those who don't vote?

Don't agree with that David - you would find that some of them would deliberately ruin the voting paper and others would just vote for the first name on the voting paper, regardless of who it was.
It needs people to care about who they want in power.

Well maybe make it a condition that they have to complete the voting paper at work or under supervision and for those that don't understand maybe a box to tick explaining so? IOr have more helpers at the Polling Station. Most people have to complete a form for opening bank accounts, obtaining a driving license getting a credit card - so what is the difficulty in making it compulsory?

However, if someone supervises you with the voting paper, then your right to secrecy is gone and I wouldn't be happy with that.
I have no problems with filling forms in for anything I want, I also vote at every election, local and national and have always done so, but I think people should be allowed the freedom to decide whether they want to vote or not. You start making too many things compulsory and you start turning it into something resembling a police state. I do like to have some freedom in my every day choices.

We are in a police state now - the United Kingdom is about to be renamed the Republic of Gordon Brown Plonkers and no one has to say sorry anymore under penalty of living 6 months with Mandleson and Darling.
Freedom of choice is right - but I do feel that people in our country don't realise what it is to live in a democracy and not like somewhere in an Arab state or China

Hopefully we will never have to know what that is like.
At least I still have some freedom to say and think what I like (as long as the PC brigade don't hear me![:D]) and pretty much do what I want as long as I don't break the law.
