If it's anything like the ones near me, they usually give you a flat. There's always housing associations? You could try them.
Depending on the Local Authority, you may find that Council and Housing Association waiting lists and properties are now one and the same thing..or that Council Housing and Local Authority Houses are pooled together with houses becoming available to people on a joint list.

Private rented is always an option..and quicker to arrange.
Completion Certificate received September 2012.

HI LD
If you lived in East Yorkshire you would have a Housing Officer, surely you must have one in your area. that person is the person to speak to, they are the only ones who can 'bend' the rules and are capable of looking to future circumstances. ring your council customer Services and ask for an appointment ... don't take no for an answer.

As you know from my recent thread, we have just got a council house! Surely you get points for living in the area? We got automatic points for living in the borough all our lives and for having 3 children, yes, our private rented house is adequate, although expensive, but I wrote a letter to the director of housing 2 weeks ago, asking if our case could be looked at again as not being in a secure tenancy is really aggravating my stress/anxiety/depression, we got a call last week from the senior housing officer saying she was coming to reassess us and she did her utmost best to get us some extra medical points and she had a perfect house that had just become available, I believe it was meant to be, and we are so grateful to her for all her help. If I had not written that letter, we would still be plodding along on the waiting list, and our private tenancy has just come to an end, so great timing all round.

don't give up hope, keep on at them [:)]

Yes, good point, also you could try to approach social services, tell them about your living conditions, they have to agree what youre going through there is not good for you and your children.

Another thing that might work is to go to the housing with your chuldren and say you cannot stand another day there and want to declare yourself homeless. They may have to listen to you then. I have just been having a quick look at our housing policy and it says if suffering physical or enotional harm then you can apply under the homeless criteria. I assume this could be mental abuse. Anything and everything is worth a try.

Good luck, LD, thinking of you.

i live in county durham wizzard cant see the authorities being that different do you
as i said earlier the lady was amazed when i told her my situtaion i could see it on her face
i work 1-9 so the only time i get to go down to the council is the busiest time of the day
good thing is at least i dont have to trail the kids with me as they are back at school
i just think the way they handle applications is shocking and really need to look through the applications, i stated in the information box what the situation was like here, gather they didnt read it huh

HI LD
See your Housing office Hun ... it really will help, and as Lily said earlier it won't hurt to talk to Social Services. On a side note ... I'm ex Co Durham ... I was dragged up in a litle place called Seaham Harbour .. Dawdon to be exact.

If it's the only way to get something sorted out LD, then it might be worth thinking about Social Services. I really hope it doesn't come to that and the housing officer can help you x

You could be right about social services LD, however, what prompted me to say that was the coment about your son. Its not fair that he is spoken to like this, it just cant be doing any of you any good and they do help some families. I dont know about housing offiers so that might be your best way forward.

Which ever way or who ever you turn to, I just hope you can get something very soon.

That is about what we pay now (moving to council house next Friday [:D]) and our landlord is being really strict, they have sent us a list of things WE MUST DO, regarding the condition of the house when we leave! Along the lines of "the oven must be of one standard and one only, immaculate" [:0] same for everything, wants the carpets cleaning, the blinds washing, the gardens done, (but its rained every day for weeks!) I am now so worried that we are not going to get our deposit back and I need it to pay for my new carpets in the new house. [:(!] been really stressed this week, trying to get the new house ready and now got to try and sort this one out too! aaaaaarrrgh
