hi, again hope everyone is well.

Just a question regarding council house renting, We are renting private at present(£450 a month)and I have had my name on the council waiting list with my wife for last five years, will going bankrupt affect me later taking or being offered a council house, hopefully if I`m made Br, the situation will be me not be working but my wife will be.

Thanks

Neil

Hi Neil

No not all especially if you don't owe a social landlord any money.

Best regards

Hi Rainbow,

We have never been in arrears with our private landlord as our regular household bills have always come first. Its just my personal debt we are struggling with. I worried if when I get offered one while bankrupt they might turn us down.

Thanks

Neil

No they won't turn you down and if they have a local policy (Which many don't including HA's) you can always ask someone to stand guarantor for you but they don't even check so don't worry about it. If your wife isn't going BR the tenancy can just be in her sole name.
But honestly Council's and Housing Assoc don't even ask the question the only question they will ask is have you owed rent/arrears to a social landlord (This doesn't include Private Landlords) or have you ever been evicted from SOcial Housing.
Relax its not something that needs to come on the radar.

No i concur with Rainbow, a Council or Housing Association will not take this into account, you have already been accepted on to the main Housing register so the wait is now for an appropiate offer. Social Landlords are intrested in a good rent history, an abilty to adhere to tenancy conditions!
It may be worth advising the Local Auhtority of your change of circumstance and that there is a real need for you to be housed somewhere more affordable. But with the housing shortage the wait is difficult to predict.

Hope that helps!
