Can I ask you a question about contact lenses? At the moment I wear monthly disposable ones, but I keep thinking about changing to daily disposables. In your professional opinion which ones are the best?

I would definitely say daily disposables. You only wear them once so there is no chance of re-infecting your eye. They don't need solutions which can sometimes cause allergic responses. You don't have to clean them every night. They are far more practical. If you are going away no need to carry case and solutions. Just keep a few spare in your bag for emergencies such as unexpected nights away from home. One of my patient's told me she gets in bed and takes her lenses out and throws them on the carpet, then hoovers them the next day.

The only downside is cost. I think you pay £10 per month at the moment and the cheapest way to get your lenses will be online. I think the best price will be about £19.00 per month. You will have to have a fitting for dailys and be issued with a specification. This should then be valid for 12 months.

Thanks for that Dave. I had an eye infection a couple of months ago (I looked like I had been punched!) and it's made me think about what I actually put in my eyes! I might have a word with the optician about changing.

As we are on the subject of disposable lenses, I could only get soft lenses due to perscription +7,+7 was not available in disposables is this still the case.

I'm a -7 (-2.25 x 090) and -6.5 (-1.75 X 090) and also have the same question!

Is your glasses prescription +7 or your contact lenses?
They will be different as the contact lenses sit nearer your eye and need to be more plus.

Either way some 2 weekly and monthly disposable lenses are available in your prescription.

Mel is that your spectacle prescription too? If so I will send you some daily disposables to try. If not can you post what it is and I'll work out what to send.

I think my contact lenses and glasses are the same prescription. I've decided that I am going to the opticians tomorrow to see about changing to daily disposables. It will cost me another £12 a month, but my sight is too important. I'm not the worlds greatest at cleaning my lenses (although I have got much better since the eye infection!) and I have split quite a few by catching them in the side of the case, or sticking a nail through them when I'm cleaning them. If only I could afford laser surgery...

Oh well. We've got Tevez ready and Saha almost there. I'm sure it will be fine.

Specsavers own brand dailys are okay but might not be as comfortable as the "new improved Ciba Vision Focus Dailies All Day Comfort" Switch to the own brand and have a check up wearing them. Once you have your specification you could order the better ones online. I can give you the web addresses if you need them. But try the own brand ones first. If they are okay carry on with them.

Thanks Dave. I think I've got Specsavers own brand monthly disposables (I can only find their name on the packaging) and they are the most comfortable lenses I've ever had, so fingers crossed the dailies will be as good! At least I get my check ups free, and money of glasses if I stick with Specsavers.

Sorry to be a pain Dave, but a couple more questions - I've never been given a contact lens prescription, only one for my glasses. Is that normal, and can I just ask for the contact lens one?

Thinking about it, can you let me have the website address for the contact lenses so I can look into all options!

Thanks for the information, I was refering to my glasses perscription, I had glasses and contact lenses at the same time was never given a seperate perscription for contact lenses.

Well I had my fitting today. The Specsavers ones were a definite no-no - I couldn't even see out of them for some reason! They then gave me an All Day Comfort one in my left eye and a more expensive on in the right - thankfully the left eye is the most comfortable!

I will be shopping around to get them cheaper as I can't have them on the DD scheme so there is no benefit for me having them from Specsavers.
