We have been talking to a debt advising company who will then appointed an IP to our case. They required 2 payments so go ahead with the IVA to then pass onto an IP to act on our behalf with creditors while in the IVA.

So the question I am asking is: Is it better to go throught a debt advice agency or to go direct to an independent IP to start an IVA?

Please help as we are not sure which way to go now as we have the booklet with the I&E in & we have to sign the relevent docs & send all the paperwork required in to them.

Hi Plec
It can be so confusing talking to several different people at a company - the first company I approached I spoke to so many people but never the IP who was drawing up my proposal. I was not even offered a phone conversation with the Ip which I found strange.
it was not until I found this forum that I realised that it was so important to get the iva right from the beginning and deal with a good IP.
That was when I approached Melanie for a second opinion and straight away I felt confident and it felt like my interests were being looked after and the iva was going to
If something does not feel right with your present company, I would urge you to speak with at least one other firm - you want to get this right from the beginning.
Good Luck

I agree with emma. 5 years is a long time to be stuck with a sevice you are not happy with.

its not about being stuck with them, this company has asked for 2 months up front why? what is going to happen with this payment regardless? shop about you don't need to go with the first comapny that offers you a cuddle, is the only way
i can put it, be careful pay nothing up front and be sure you know what you are doing .

Hi plec,

If you are looking for a second opinion you may find www.IVA.com useful. We publish a list of IVA firms and IPs together with client reviews of their services.

We recommend checking several firms before deciding which to work with. As Emma says, it is important that you feel comfortable with your IP and that they will be there to support you throughout the term of your IVA.

Good luck with your application and please let us know how it all goes.

Kind regards,
Terry Balfour

Great news Plec
Tina was great to me and very helpful.
I had conversations with Angela also and she was great.
Sarah, who deals with the creditors meeting was brilliant.
And of course Melanie - what can I say..... ACE
I have no doubts that I got the best advice possible and great support and at the end of the day a iva that I feel very comfortable with..
Good luck on your journey..
