Also I'm concerned that I might be asked to repay some Child Tax and Working Tax credits because some people I know have had huge bills after they were told they were entitled to the money?
Do I pay the total amount of all my debts or is some of it written off?

No - the Inland Revenue become a creditor in the proceedings, just like everyone else.
