I live out in the wilds in the NE and travel miles to see him; he is an NHS dentist - does not believe in private practice; all his fees fall into one or other of the three the categories determined by the Govt. He is single handed and has one "hell of a waiting list".
I go to a private dentist for a 6 monthly check, I think it's £25.00, if I need treatment I'd have to have sedation as I have a phobia, I take my granddaughter with me to have the check and I can't play up!
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.

Thanks Mel I am definatly more at ease now with that thought.
You are very lucky to have a NHS dentist and even luckier if they are good!!
For all those that may be considering plans Tescos looks like a good one with an added bonus of 1000 clubcard points. Their health care is also competitive with a £50 gift card.
Back to square one but what dunt kill you makes you stronger!!
Hi fingerscrossed have you enquired of your local health authority as they will give yoiu a list of dentists who are presently taking on people under the the national health service, i belong to a well known chemists dental plan and pay £9 a month which covers me for the 3 costs, ie. £16.60 for a checkup, clean etc, £45 for a dental filling, extraction etc, £185 for all other work, there are of course limits on this, you do have to pay the money and then claim it back but so far so good. I would definately give your healt authority a phone call though. Good luck and take care. x
Om shanti, namesté, good luck to all who are embarking on the IVA journey, it isn't always an easy one but the outcome is the best.
IVA COMPLETED August 2012, received Completion certificate 18.4.13.
Dental treatment is one of the things I haven't had during my IVA, I've just crossed my fingers and hoped I wouldn't need treatment, and so far so good.
It's one of the many things that I never considered when I was completing my I & E, as I was just in such a rush to get things sorted.
I really think there should be a standard form when taking out an IVA that lists every possible expense as the people taking out the IVA aren't always thinking clearly at the time(I include myself in this!)and will forget to list an expense, then find themselves struggling.
I do have an NHS dentist just that I dont think he is on the straight an narrow to be honest and think he is trying to perform some rather expensive work which is very invasive that is not needed. I wouldnt actually pay for NHS treatment as I am tax credits and hold an exemption certificate.
I too was in a huge hurry to get my IVA through and I know hindsight is a wonderful thing ,but I would of most certainly of done things differantly.

Had my second opinion, and although she said she couldnt say I 100% dont need root canal treatment she came up with a grand total of £1725 worth of work, that the NHS dentist didnt point out just went on about my root canal, so its back to the NHS dentist for me!!
Although still not filled with faith.

I would be very careful before agreeing to root canal treatment, especially if you're not having any problems.
I had a problem with my tooth a couple of years ago and the dentist said that the only thing she could do was root canal treatment with a crown. I asked if I could have the tooth out as it's right at the back and she said no, it could affect my whole jaw.
I had it done and after parting with over £400 (NHS root canal, private crown) I was still getting pain. When I asked the dentist about it, she said that she may not have been able to get all of the root as this sometimes happens! If she'd told me that before hand I would have saved myself the pain and expense and insisted she take it out.
I changed dentist soon after and when she did x-rays she saw that the tooth was actually cracked above the gum line and as the previous dentist hadn't managed to get all the root I could either refer me to an orthodontist who would have another go at the root canal treatment (£1000+) or I could have it out (£45), but she would advise me to have it out.
I haven't had it out yet as it doesn't hurt all the time, and Sensodyne seems to help, but I'll definitely have it out if it gets worse. I really feel like I was taken for a ride by the other dentist, and after a couple of other incidents (all of them painful!) I only stayed with her until I could change to a new dentist.
Sorry, I've just realised how long I've rambled on for!
FC - that's a lot of treatment, so I don't blame you for going back to the NHS dentist.
Skippy that doesn't sound good.
Remind me to bore you one day with my tale of having a nerve removed!
