Hi oba

32 years in a DMP is definately not a workable solution for you - I am guessing that your debts are quite high which is probably why the IP is reluctant to put forward a variation for you.

Bankruptcy now looks a sensible option for you, and if Skippy, Coco and Scaredkez's experiences are anything to go by the procedure is likely to be painless.

Go to Court with your head held up high that you tried to repay your debts, but could not afford to and your baby is actually far more important.

You can contact your local county court and ask for the application forms for bankruptcy. You will likely have to open a new account but there are many threads already on the forum explaining which providers to go with.

Hi oba, just to let you know that you can also complete the forms online, print them off and take them to court with you where you will sign them. You don't sign the paperwork until you are in front of the bankruptcy clerk. Make sure you take enough copies of the paperwork with you - I didn't and they charged me £7 to copy them!

You will also need to ring your local county court to find out if they deal with bankruptcies as the one closest to my home didn't. You will also need to check if you must make an appointment as some courts operate an appointment system and others a 'walk in' system. Be warned that some courts have longer waiting lists than others - last I heard the waiting list at Brighton was 12 weeks!

Regarding bank accounts, Nationwide and the Co-operative bank accept undischarged bankrupts, although I have my account with Think Banking as you get a Maestro card rather than a cash card. I opened my account after I was made bankrupt just to be on the safe side, although I have heard of people opening a basic account prior to bankruptcy.

Good luck, and if you have any more questions, please ask and someone here will be able to help you.

Barclays also do an account for people who are undischarged from BR. I would advise that when the time is right you go in person and be honest about your circumstances. If you leave an account with a nil balance it is not frozen at the time of BR. Good luck.

Thank you all for you advise and support. I have just registered on the government insolveny website, where I can download and complete the forms. How much money do I have to pay at the courts when I appear before them.

I'm not sure as the fees have gone up since I went BR in March. It should be on the website, but if you can't find it hopefully Scaredkez will be able to help.

the current fee is £485 thats made up of court fees of £150 and the rest is for the official receiver, if you are any kind of benefit the court fee may be waived and also if your annual income is below £15k ring your local court who deals with BR for more information on that one, its cash only as well.
i wish you look oba its not that bad, i have my OR meeting tomorrow so will let you know how me and hubby get on.
