Hi, this may seem like an odd question but can you still set up direct debits in an IVA? I only ask as all mine were set up pre IVA and I set up a new one last week and the bank have declined it.

Before I call up to enquire I just wanted to check if there was some kind of policy?

Thanks

I did all mine online with internet banking but then they were pre-iva...
Mind you I set up a standing order online today and so far so good - although when HSBC spot it (since it was for our IVA payment) they will no doubt close down our account!!

So not sure why your bank is refusing it - seems odd and I would prob go in and talk to someone as to why? afterall if you are in iva it is your money and not in credit??? [?]

Hi Poppy,
Are you keeping your origional bank account - assuming your bank was not one of your creditors! I had an overdraught with my bank so I had to change accounts.
My new account has no problems and all direct debits go through, if I had tried it with the old one there may have been a problem.
One of the experts will help and be along soon, just trying to add my experience!!
Hugs,

Thanks for your replies. This is a new account which I've had for over a year, I have no debt with the bank.

I'm on hold to the bank now to try and find out why!!

Which bank is this with? Some of them are funny about people in IVA's.

I'm with Alliance & Leicester. Just rang them and they said according to them the direct debit is set up and there are no problems.

The plot thickens!

I bet that call cost me a fortune too!

Having a really bad day today!

If you do online banking, you should be able to check. Perhaps the firm you are dealing with has set it up?

Next time you want to ring any of those nasty 0870 type numbers, just check on 'SayNoto0870', they usually have alternative geographical or freephone numbers instead of the expensive ones. I use it all the time.
