Hi congrats on the baby, how exciting for you!

Hope your OH avoids redundancy.....a company can make a pregnant woman redundant, as long as the reasons for the redundancy do not include pregnancy....she should be treated as if she isn't pregnant when going through the redundancy procedure.

If there are any doubts to the fairness of redundancies they should be flagged immediately.

Good luck xx

Oh what lovely news, a baby boy to look forward to. Like the others I will be hoping your OH is safe from redundancy.
Best wishes,
C[:)]

Morning All,
the wife has had her redundancy update and it not looking good. Out of her team of five, three will be going.
She has been told however that one particular aspect will be key to the selection process and she has never had training on this. She was asked instead to train in a different area which they have said will be defunct as of 3rd April (leaving day).
Two other people do know this area. (coincidnece eh?)
I am looking into the legality of this as I don't see how they can select someone on the basis of training they have not offered to her.
Hopefully there will be a basis for appeal.
Fingers crossed.

That's not good news at all.

I hope you do have grounds to appeal. Have a chat to CAB see if they can give you any information.

Well, after having a phone conversation with our local CAB it doesn't look good.
It seems they can use whatever skills they see fit as selection criteria although the advisor did say that it seems they have 'done a number on us' in order to lay off my wife.
Unfortunately there is no way to prove it so an appeal would unlikely to be successful.

Why not have a chat with an employment lawyer to see if they agree with the advice you have been given. Most firms will provide a 1/2 hour free of charge consultation, and it does seem unfair that your partner is being targeted in this way.

I would take Melanies advice, or if your partner is in a union get her to talk to her rep.
My daughter was faced with a similar situation and we found a lot of advice from searching google for pregnancy and employment. In the end she spoke with her union rep and got the advice she needed. As it turned out it wasnt needed, but it always best to be armed. [;)]
Good luck whatever happens.

Hi All,
the wife has had it confirmed today that she has been selected for redundancy. It totally stinks though. The reasons:

* She had no graphics skills - an area which has not been involved in her role at all in the past or present. They said it 'may' be involved in the future of the role but not certain.
* She has not had training in one piece of software - This was because she was asked to train in a different area which is defunct as of today. She has never had access to this training. Also, the person who has actually had this training has not used this software for over a year.

I'm going to have to get her down to CAB for some independent advice. They did confirm that she will get her maternity pay but that's not going to help much.

Shaun, I am so sorry to hear that your wife will be made redundant. It sounds as though they were determined to get rid of her as well.

I hope the CAB can help you as well.

It certainly sounds like they've done a number on her. I don't know how easy it's going to be to prove unfair dismissal.
Afterwards, her team leader came up to her and siad "At least you can put your feet up for 39 weeks now!"
I said I hope she told her where to go!
