Hi. I was made bankrupt in February 2003 and discharged under the new rules in April 2005. At the time of my discharge, I was earning c.£15,000 - in March 2006 I was made redundant but within one week of my notice period ending I was in a new job that earned £16,000 per year. After three months, that was upped to £18,000 and 6 months later it became £18,600. I have just had a rise to £19,251.

Since March 2006 I have held a bank account in my own name with the Nationwide, that enabled me to have just a cash machine card. My wages have always been paid into that account and I have never gone overdrawn etc. I now have no debts whatsoever.

However, I have tried this morning to upgrade my account to a debit card, and am told I am still unable to do so. Would you be able to tell me what my best way is to go about getting a debit card account? I have tried to put the past behind me and have now proven (I think) that I can handle money and am no longer a realistic risk. The only reason I want a debit card is purely to help rebuild my credit rating for a future mortgage, as I feel my life is totally different now.

Thanks for your time.

IVA's and Bankruptch usually stay on your credit file for 6 years from the day its starts.
There are other banks will give you a debit card account.

Hi Emma and welcome.
There are accounts with cards avaliable. Coop cashminder has visa electron, thinkbanking has maestro and Natwest step account. The best thinbg would be to physically go to the bank and speak to them and explain the situation.

Hi
Your credit file will be clear in Feb 09.
It is unlikely that you will get an all singing and dancing debit card until then, however try applying for the Vanquis credit card, they offer small credit limits initially and are expensive but if you pay the balance each month you will build up your credit rating again and will more than likely be able to switch to a better card and bank account after Feb 09.
As already stated you could apply for the Think Banking debit card but it will do nothing for your credit rating

Thanks a lot Andy. Small credit and prompt payment is all I want - just something to prove to them and I guess myself that things have changed.

Thanks, but I won't go to Lloyds. It's partly their fault I'm in the mess I'm in. When I went in to try and sort out my spiralling debts, they kept giving me more and more loans for more than I needed, despite it being obvious I'd struggle to make the payments. I even made the local papers over it through the Citizen's Advice campaign over it, and turned down the BBC "Real Story" show which I could have gone on.

Suffice to say I won't touch Lloyds with a barge pole - even if I admit I should have known myself what they were offering was wrong, they shouldn't have offered it in the first place.
