As a serving police officer I had concerns in regards to disclosing my intention to seek an IVA at work (see previous post)

Following advice from Melanie I contacted Mike Thomas at Debt Wizard and actually spoke to him today. Thanks Melanie, he was very informative. He put my fears at ease letting me know that he personally knew that there were numerous officers in IVA's and even a few who had declared bankruptcy not only in my force but also all over the country. Not all, but most of these officers have disclosed to their force and have not been disciplined/outcast as a result.

The most important thing that I took away from speaking to Mike was that I had not breached any regulations or committed any offence but was simply attempting to "LAWFULLY DISCHARGE" my debts.

So as 'honesty is the best policy' I've bitten the bullit and emailed Professional Standards disclosing my intention to seek an IVA. It did take me all day to build up the courage to hit the send button but hey?

I'll let you know what reply I get from them.

The police tend not to want their officers to stumble along with a heavy burden of debt for rather obvious reasons, so I would be very surprised at any police force that found an IVA to be an inappropriate solution.

Just to let you know. I recieved an email from Proffessional Standards yesterday thanking me for informing them and reassuring me that the information I disclosed to them would be held confidentially.

I feel much better now and more confident about carrying on with the IVA process.

Glad to hear that you are sorted Providence. I am a civilian worker and won't be volunteering the informaton to them. It's a good job I don't want to apply for anything else havin read the application form for my force. I would stand no chance with an IVA

If it's any help I had a policeman stop me a few weeks ago when I had just taken the plunge to apply for an IVA. I was driving a "bit wonky" because I was in tears about my debt and trying to get home. Anyway I was a bit of a wuss and confessed all to the officer. After he had done his nasty bit and told me off (but let me go) he gave me a smile and said that he had entered an IVA two years ago and he had been an officer for five and told me things do get better. What a nice guy - I wish all policeman were like that (I hope he's not on here - hi if you are !!)

After your story Popcorn...you wonder how many people we come across on a daily basis are in our situation.
I know that people would be surprised about me being in an IVA, as I hide it so well, so that must be the same for alot of people in debt I would suspect.

Kal funny you should say that about wondering how many people are in some kind of debt situation, when I told my family and freinds about my IVA won drunken night it ws like a chain reaction. We all had a good laugh, not about the debt but how we were all so frightened to admit we were sorting out our problems!!
