does your employers find out about the agreement, i am a fireman and if they found out it could be damaging for my career prospects

Welcome to the Forum Paul,

If you are proposing an IVA, your employer does not need to be informed. Compared to bankruptcy and IVA is more discreet, however you must be aware that by entering into an IVA your details will be on the Insolvency Register which can be accessed by the public. In saying this only a very small percentage of the public know about the register.
