Hi all,

Long time no post! I have had a letter through the post saying that my energy bill is going up from £150 a month (which was a lot) to £280 a month.

Obviously this is quite a hike.....

I have just received a small bonus from work, and as it is six month review time, I am sending my payslips and a cheque for the 10/50/50 split.

Would the IVA company be likely to accept me paying the bonus money to the energy company in order to get the monthly payment down (entire bonus was £400 after tax). Bear in mind that my payment is only £300 a month at the moment, so even a 15% reduction would be of limited use, and preferable to a payment break!

Cheers!

DK

Blimey can't help on the bonus but that energy bill is enormous, have they got that right? I'm assuming you don't live in a mansion!

I only pay £76 a month for gas & elec and our house is 4 bedroomed, I work from home and so heating on during the day in winter too.

Really have they got it right?

I know. We are getting an engineer out to have a butchers as it's an incredible amount really. But we did that a few months back and they found nothing wrong....

it certainly seems like something is wrong doesn't it? Well done on getting someone out, there is no way a normal family house should cost that a month!

Do you live in a castle?? Or are you paying for the street lights too??

You have a monthly allowance for gas and leccy, whats it set at in the iva?

You could ask for a payment break to catch up and see what the ip says.

£76 a month seems incredibly cheap to me Fiona for heating and electric for a 4 bed house! we have a 3 bed and our electric is £65 a month (and we still owe £230) and heating is £100 a month and I only have the heating on for 3 and a half hours on an evening and half an hour in the morning, I'm going to have to increase my electric soon really.

I do keep checking it and it goes up a little and comes down a little but all in all seems to work. We're mid terrace even though 4 bedroomed which probably helped, and cavity wall insulation AND a combi boiler, all of which help a bit. I know often people tell me that's cheap, but there are only 2 of us, that must make a difference too?

yeah it will do, esp on your electric, having two kids who can't seem to grasp switching a light off when they leave a room and seem permanently having the TV on eats away at the leccy I think!!!

We pay £83 for gas and £87 for electric and that is for a four bed detached. We have cavity wall insulation, loft insulation and a combi boiler and my payments have not gone up since I changed utility companies.

well, we have oil so have no option to change to anyone else as the price is what it is whoever you order it from, can't have cavity wall insulation as we have a very old house that doesn't have cavity walls

Ouch!! Oil can be really expensive!!

We were able to get the insulation done free - always thought that we had cavity wall as standard as the house is late 80's but we didn't!! It's amazing the difference it makes.

tell me about it Jan!, a couple of years ago I could get the tank filled for £450 which would last all winter, now the same volume costs £800, and that's if you purchase it at the right time (sept really) I think currently it's about 68ppl which would cost me £884 to fill the tank, if I had my heating on all day I would use that in about 3 months so we have to be very careful with it, last winter the price rocketed as they were profiteering from the cold weather, it went up to over £1.12 a litre.

Our last house was a brand new one which was well insulated but this is the price you pay for an old quirky rural home I guess

I wish we paid £76 a month! We pay over £100 a month for a one bedroom maisonette and there's only 2 of us! The problem is it's an end terrace with large windows, solid brick walls and a front door that has gaps in it!

lem - that is a lot of money!! Of course they have you by the short and curlies don't they? Those of us with gas can pick and choose who we want.

That's a lot of money as well Skip. Must admit in the winter we have heavy curtains that we close at the front of the house and blinds at the back and it does make a difference.

yep I got my insulation for free too and that has also made a difference I think. Yes we are very economical on electrics, and have a fan oven too so quick to cook less time on.

I guess we must have an economical house, not sure I could afford some of the bills you guys are getting. But I do remember when I lived in a old house, semi detached at the top of a cold windy hill a few years ago our prices were much higher!
