Hi Markiboy, good luck with fighting this. I can't believe they are being so short sighted - surely those with debts are more of a risk than someone who has done something positive.

Can I suggest that you have a chat with Mike Thomas who trades as The Debt Wizard. Mike is an ex-police officer who has close links with a number of UK police forces including the Met, and he may be able to suggest a way to appeal this decision. You can find Mike by Googling "Debt Wizard".

What a mad decision. Lets face people who are in IVAs are probably the safest best as we can not get any credit to run up any more bills. effectively we are debt free when our IVA are completed a lot of people out there are still up to their necks in debt just like we all were but not yet doing anything about it.

Melanie as always great advice & contacts

I quite agree buttercup, we have all been honest and upfront with our problems, and, as you say, we will be debt free in 5 years. Those who are in denial or who are really struggling are the ones who could be a risk. The ones who are being constantly hounded by creditors and looking for a way to pay what is being demanded of them rather than the ones who have taken responsibility for their actions, they are the ones who might be a target.

Hey markiboy, just wanted to say I hope you get this all sorted. Good advice from Melanie, let us know how you get on as I think there are probably a lot of people out there who are in your situation that are following your story. Viki X

Thats is complete discrimination. I really hope you get it sorted out.
I've been offered a civilian job today but am waiting to see whether I've passed the checks. I'm not holding out much hope reading your post though.

Good luck
Looking to a debt free future!

I checked on the website of a large midlands police force tonight to see what their financial criteria for applicants was - not only will they not accept a bankrupt until 3 years after their discharge, and then only on production of their completion certificate, they class IVA the same as bankruptcy and will not give you a job until you have gone three years after completion!

Not impressed with them at all!

Back on nights tomorrow everybody is shocked. I was talking to chap today who is struggling with his mortgage and just bought a bike £1700 he couldn't afford on his card. He is the one at risk not me.
The federation were rubbish we pay up to £15 a month for their service and they are c**p. Everybody now knows I am in an IVA but very little know what it means. It has been a bad week and we are coming up to our first review can it get any worst?? I won't tempt fate.

Mark - please give Mike a ring. I do think that you will find him very helpful, and he will probably know the people right at the top of your Federation.

Hi,

I'm reading this topic with interest as I was verbally offered a job in police staff AFTER disclosing my IVA status on my application form, but received a letter today saying that because I couldn't provide a certificate of satisfaction, that they were withdrawing the job offer. I'm totally, totally gutted....as has been pointed out on here, being in an IVA precludes us taking out further credit and the fact that we live within a budget and AREN'T struggling with debts, means we're less likely to be open to corruption.

I'm appealing but don't know what chance I have....really sympathise with the OP
