Hi
I have finally got round to telling my two daughters about our situation ,, they are 15 and 12 so I think they fully understood what I was saying.
But now even though my iva has just been approved I feel as though I have let them down and they now cant have what they want through there childhood.
All I keeping thinking about and reading about is negative and how people struggle in an IVA and are living month to month on only a few pounds.
Please could we hear some positive stories.
Also it would be interesting to know how much money people have left each month after all the household bills are paid, ie left for contingucy, dental, optical and food and to live on.
53 down 7 to go !!
Cant wait till December 2012

Hi caraf
I think in the first few months of an iva you do have your up and down moments. I tend to look at how things would be without the iva and I know it would nothing but stress and worry. At least now I know we have the money to live. Before we just existed from one month to the next paying bills. Look positively, save where you can, think about what you buy, do you really need it. If the opportunity for a bit of overtime is there then do it and save your 50% for extras for the children or as contingency.
I cant really say how much we have left each month as we do a fair bit of overtime and hubby is monthly and I am weekly paid, but i do know we are managing and not just because of the overtime.
Give yourself a little time to settle and you will feel better.

The point of an IVA is that you dont have plenty of spare cash left over each month! dental, optical etc should have been factored in!
At the end of the day you just have to knuckle down and get one month after the other out the way!
The more negative you are then the more negative your daughters will be.
Your 15 year old daughter will be a legal adult soon and might want to get a part time job.that would mean her life wasnt affected as much by the IVA.
Just take one month at a time and start plodding on..what other choice do you have!

My husband and I have £140 per week for food, clothes, petrol and contigency - I find it a challenge each week to come within this and we have little scope for any extras - however once a month we do manage to have a few drinks in the pub and possibly a meal too!

I have been in an iva for 10 months and life really is so much better than before, in fact I have more money than before because now I can just about manage to live instead of just robbing peter to pay paul,as aguise says keeping 50% of any overtime is a big help.I can honestly say my 2 boys aged 14 and 16 have not gone without anything they needed so far and lets be honest teaching them that they cant always get everything they want can only be a good thing.Dont get me wrong its not easy and I do sometimes have panics about it (am getting nervous about first review now) but I suppose thats only natural ,so hang on in there Im sure you will cope and realise just what a good thing an iva can be.

To be honest we have been in our IVA now since June 2006, yes its hard, yes some months or weeks are tougher then others but to be honest we are in a better situation now then pre IVA, simply because if we do find that we have spare cash we need to think a lot more wiser then before, pre IVA we would go out buy whatever and not worry about next week, now if we have a spare £30-40 we find ourselves thinking ahead, its making us much more wiser on how to handle our money.
We dont have a contingency fund, its one thing we didnt take into account and that scares me if something like our boiler was to breakdown or alike, but after reading this forum i have found out that if something like that happens speak to your IP and they might be able to help.
We dont have things like Dental or Optical, i wear glasses and managed to get a free eye test from work, thankfully i dont need knew ones, but to be honest if i did SpecSavers are doing buy one get one free and I would have to try to save any spare cash.
At the end of the day my philosphy is simple, we got ourselves in this pickle and its only us that can get ourselves out and the sooner we can the better, i am only saying thats our philiosphy and not that everyone else is the same, its hard i have down days but then i have good days knowing that in 3 yrs time that glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel will finally be reaching distance!! I would hate to think of my stress levels now if we werent in this IVA and what could have happened if we did not action it when we did. as for what is left over each month its hard to say, as i am paid monthly and my partner is weekly and Self Employed so his wages fluctate alot so some weeks we might have spare cash and other weeks we are short and thats where we have to think logically about what we do with our spare cash!
Please try to stay positive it will all work out for the best, and your kids will appreciate it in the long run as they will have happier and less stressed parents

I cannot understand why your IP did not suggest that you have some form of contingency fund or an allowance for medical expenditure. You may have got yourself into a pickle, but that does not mean that you have a continual struggle for the next five years.

It worries me how many people don't seem to have a medical, dental or optical allowance. It's unrealistic to expect anyone to go for 5 years without needing prescriptions, a check up at the dentist (maybe more) or their eyes tested.

I didn't have a contingency fund, and with hindsight (how many times have I said that!) I would have pushed for one.

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

I dont know Melanie, I will have to re-check the paperwork but as far as I am aware there is nothing on there for that type of fund, i have noticed many on here have, maybe its something we need to think about now we are expecting our first baby! but either way im still happier now then i was pre IVA, yes its hard but it was 100 times harder before.
Thanks Melanie I will check our paperwork tonight

Skippy - at the moment im fortunate that until June next year my dental, perscriptions and eye test are free due to being pregnant but I think its something that we need to think about for my partner and for when my matenity card expires! I suppose we didnt think of it as a must more of deal with it when it happens. I think we didnt want to push our luck to be honest, there are things on our I&E that we have told them that dont need to be there like smoking neither one of us have smoked in nearly 4 yrs but they still allow £50 a month for tabacco! strange but true. I will talk to our IP soon and see what they suggest.

Your IVA sounds a bit like mine - I had £40 for gas and there wasn't any gas at the property! I did query it and they told me not to worry about it!

I have a couple of items on my I&E which are higher than the actual figure. When I questioned them I again was told not too worry !! but what happens at review time, do you leave the figure the same or do you put the actual figure in and risk having to make a higher iva payment

Your income and expenditure account should have been accurate in the first place. I wonder if this is another example of IP's putting forward inflated figures with the knowledge that creditors will ask for more money. If so, what silly times we are currently operating in.

I feel that you should insist that your IP uses the correct figures in future - even if this means a higher payment, as you do sign off the IVA proposals saying that they are accurate and creditors are relying upon that trust.
