I have shopped at Aldi for years - so why am I so much in debt!!!! only joking. Aldi is really good but I have noticed an increase in my shopping bill even there.

If you want to treat yourself to what seems like total luxury, try making your own truffles.

I was on a budget Christmas 2006 and found that people LOVED them. You can use the own brand chocolate - it's got a higher % of cocoa solids than that disgusting tasting cooking chocolate - long life cream, get miniatures if you put any alcohol in them and use dried fruit and nuts. It was no only therapeutic, it was appreciated more than going out and picking something off the shelf.

It also meant killing several birds with one stone because making batches of different flavours meant I made everyones prezzies within the same time frame. There are loads of web sites that sell the choccie type boxes and petit fours cases as well. Puts you off chocolate for a while too !!!!
There's light at the end of the tunnel - it's just that sometimes the tunnel seems so long.

The online shopping, which we can do monthly works really well for us. We buy all our "normal" stuff from Tesco (we don't have an Asda, otherwise we would use that!) and our frozen stuff from Iceland (free delivery). Any fruit, veg, etc we buy from Aldi. I go and do all the shopping (yep, me - I hate shopping!) and I reckon it is saving us almost £50/month from not picking up bits of rubbish that we end up throwing away. The clubcard points and online vouchers work really well. Our Tesco shop was £14.50 cheaper than last month's because of this! Plus, we got our vouchers, so I toddled off to Tesco and purchased Sugar, Cheese, Indian sauces and Bread and got myself an extra 200 points! That's a further £2 off my next shop.

The BOGOFs work if you know you will use your free item. For example, we often buy baked beans (£1.46 each, or 2 for £2.) - beans don't go off until 2010, so that works! I would never buy something with a short shelf-life that was BOGOF (i.e. bread) because we end up chucking the free one, because our freezer is full!

Another tip - my Mum and Dad buy all our meat from the market. A sackful of chicken breasts for a tenner. They last us a month! Far, far cheaper than any of the supermarkets (although Iceland do a reasonable 5 pieces for £3).

It's all about shopping around to find what works best for you. We have full shelves and a nearly full freezer at the moment, so our next shop (next Tuesday - pay day!) will probably be a very cheap one and given we have a week in Southport, it will probably be next to nothing!

I wish I had the patience (and a garden!) to grow my own produce! [:p] My Dad grows his own stuff and it does taste so much better! [8D]

Dry debt rot
I agree with the grow your own. My boyfriend and I have just got an allotment and are looking forward to nurturing our own food in an IVA FREE ZONE!!! No money talk, in fact we needed a shed and I set him a challenge of salvaging it all, which he has nearly sucessfully managed (to the utter amusement of the 'serious growers') such satisfaction.

Hi thought i'd just have my say, where i live we have a Lidl, Aldi, Netto, Iceland, Asda, Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsburys, and a Spar store, i get the free newspapers shoved through the letterbox weekly and they have adverts and flyers in for all these stores so i can decide (if i need items) what i'm buying from where before i set off, i usualy get my fruit and veg from Lidl as they sell it at half the price of the big supermarkets.

B

Oh and we have a market 2 days a week.

We do our main shop in Tescos every Friday evening (nice and quiet). We have a list and stick to it about 95% of the time. We also take our calculator so we now how much our shopping is totalling up. Although we do get some good offers in Somerfield which are walking distance from us.

We also just have a bank account dedicated to our Food & Housekeeping budget with an electron card.

We have a same patch of grounds in our garden which we grow veg etc. We grew our gourgettes in grow bags last year and I've still got some left in the freezer.
