Hi Sue

Was very interested to read about your expertise - I have a problem which maybe related to my back I'm told am waiting to see a Consultant next month to see if they can send me for a MRI scan to confirm or not as the case maybe a possible diagnoses of Spinal Canal Spondylosis, I find I cannot walk very far at all until I get pain in my hip generating down my leg and sometimes feels like icy in my veins and the pain is awful.

Any tips for helping the pain?

Thanks
Rainbow [:)]

Sorry for sticking my nose in... Just wanted to say that my wife (who has back problems) has a lot of success with a TENS machine, they are reasonably priced at Boots.

Hi Rainbow
I have oesteoarthritis of my spine and lefthip for the last couple of years and have just had a dexa scan that showed osteoporosis in high levels in spine and left hip.
It is very painfull more so when the weather changes and gets cold.
I am under a specailist and he advises mild exercises and when my back is really bad i use a tens machine, that is very helpful, but i also use the therma care heat pads.
They really do give relief especaily when im at work.
It sounds that the pain that radiates down your leg is sciatica thats caused from pressure from your lower discs,i know when my lower back gets bad i get terrible pain in my bum and down my right leg it can be a mightmare especaily if it goes in spasm.
Good luck with your mri scan.

I've had that pain in the bum and down the legs as well - it's awful. I went to the doctors and all they told me was to take ibuprofen and it'll clear up 'eventually'. Oh the wonderful NHS!

Have they not investigated your back pain.
If the problem affects normal day to day activities then they should find out the cause, its ok to say take antiinflammatry drugs but that will just mask the pain and not treat the underlying cause.
The only reason they investigated mine was after coping with pain for a few years and being told take pain killers last year my back went in spasm, ive never known anything like it,i couldnt sit couldnt do anything i thought i was going to pass out the pain was so bad so they did an mri as an emergencey and found out i have three discs that are worn out, since then ive had physio acepuncture, and live life revolved around being carefull not to aggravate it as i dont want to go through that again,so its important to make sure theres no underlying cause for your pain.

I paid for private physiotherapy (more debt!) last year and I got stuck on the table - I laid there and cried as I was so scared. I can laugh about it now but I didn't know what to do it hurt so much. The doctor just didn't seem interested, and I've got used to having a dull ache most of the time. That's another reason I want to lose weight - although I'm not exactly huge it wouldn't hurt me to lose a stone or so.

I have muscular pain in my back sometimes and had a isotope bone scan (inject you with radioactive dye and shove you under a scanner) and it showed nothing in bones so must be muscles. I use the heat pads you buy that you stick on and once they are opened and hit the air they heat up (filled with charcoal, I think). These stay hot for quite a while and are a real relief somedays.
Keep on at your GP to refer you as it does take time for them to sometimes.....
Been told I could also do with loosing a bit of weight....what happened to the slimming club on here?
Be positive & look after yourself, there are more important things in life than debts....

Best Wishes

Hi All

Thanks for sharing all this, to be honest I don't think they know what it is but I know that over the last 5 years it has got so bad I can't walk 100 yards without stopping when I went to see my GP he just kept saying keep on walking! I saw another Dr. in the practice and he started me off on all of this but something had to happen I was taking between 10-12 Ibupen a day! I had a car accident about 7 years ago which I had whip lash from and their thinking is that this is what is causing the pain. My back often gets cramp in it or is this spasm? I will just be glad when I know what it is and I have noticed that in the last two months the two little fingers on my left hand have reduced felling and some numbness in them - But I will certainly invest in a TENS machine

Thanks again
Rainbow

I had whiplash in a car accident years ago the doctors think that's what started my back problems. Last year I was walking my mum's dog and she twisted me, and then a couple of weeks later I fell over and twisted my ankle and back and I think that's what made it really bad. Also back problems seem to run in my family so not much hope really!

Emma, the diet thread is still there and I'm still desperately trying to lose weight!
