I was a little peed off over the weekend cos my debit card kept being declined, for petrol and shopping, etc. I phoned the bank just now to find out what was going on as I was in a bit of a fix at the petrol station on saturday. I found out that someone tried to use my card or a copy of it to spend £999 pounds on thursday and six attempts of £250 pounds was on friday at a time when I know I wouldnt be out there. The bank declined them all so with hindsight I am grateful for the problem at the petrol station.

My card has been copied, cloned, I dont know which or someone is trying to buy goods with it, strange or what??? Anyway the bank (bless them and good for me) smelt a dirty little rat and didnt accept these stinking transactions. Now the card has been stopped and whoever the ratty little rat is will not be able to try anything else.

It is quite scary though, you just never know do you???

Oh Lily, that's terrible. It's a good job the bank was on the ball and didn't authorise the payments - was that the Co-op?

It is and its good to hear the banks are quick to act...

That advert on tv makes me laugh....where the bloke is sitting in the bank saying "£500 on ballet lessons..? do i look like i do ballet..?"....

That's the second case that we hve seen on this forum over the last few weeks,it must be a huge problem for banks.How do crooks use the card without the pin number or is it done on line ?

I really do not know and the bank said they dont have the details either, its been picked up quite quickly, I wouldnt spend £999 pounds or £250 pounds for that matter, it was tried 6 times so whoever copied the card was brazen. Only one suspect transaction went through, one for twenty pounds which might turn out to be me. Its only a visa electron, my petrol and my shopping were declined and today I asked why, I wouldnt have known anything about it, I am just so grateful to the bank, I would have been so upset if they had emptied my account, I remember dots posting that he lost all his money.

The fraud department are going to investigate I think the fact that the delivery address of the goods was different to the registered address of the card flagged it up.

I havent lost anything as far as I know but it is an invasion like you say, Dots and very unsettling.

Luckier than I was, before my IVA my sister-in-law obtained credit cards in my name and I had to get her arrested... like to see her try it now, lol

I believe that a lot of ATM and till locations are now covered by CCTV so hopefully many people will be lucky and it will be possible to trace and identify the person / people responsible.

This obviously wont help with online transactions though!!!!

There's a lot of it going around. The banks seem to decline quite a lot of cardholder not present transactions. It seems that flights and purchases abroad are common transactions when a cards been cloned!
My mum kept getting a strange transaction on her card. After investigation it turned out to be an internet porn site in the us!!! This was long before we even had the internet!

The banks tend to be really quick on this kind of thing. I was in Tescos once and had to use my debit card at the pharmacy, then again at the checkout and then tried to use it the third time at the ciggie counter. The third time it was refused, which annoyed me at the time, cos I knew I had money in the account. So went and got cash out instead (which worked???) then phoned them when I got home. Apparantly not only big amounts can cause a security alert on your account. If lots of small amounts are going, then an alert will go on and the card will be declined until the bank hear from you and remove the alert.

Yes we should be grateful, I got the cash for my shopping but the petrol was a problem, as they were not too keen for me to leave and then return with payment. They have cancelled the card and asked me to cut it up.
