I know it's not good when I'm supposed to be saving money but I won't use supermarket petrol - I put some of the dodgy Tesco petrol in earlier this year and it cost me a fortune.

When supermarket shopping keep an eye out for items going out of date that day - take them to shop floor worker and ask if they can put a reduction on them - if its towards the end of the day they should reduce then 2 or 3 times for you and you could end up paying £1 for a joint of meat!

That seems a huge increase in tax, I've just paid £140 for the year. Mine's only a little engine so I get the lowest band though.

I agree about Sainsbury's savings stamps and in addition Asda have a Christmas card which you can also use to save!

I have lost my local asda so I am having to use Sainsbury's.

unfortunately mine is a big car its a 3 litre engine, kia sedona, need a big car as there are 5 of us plus the dog, and i take mum and dad everywhere, we got a shock also, hubby has a very old k reg import but it is also 8 seater, dread to think what that is going to be, although smaller engine 2 litre, don't get me wrong the kia is so economical in every other way, as its diesel and a full tank can last me nearly 2 months, but what a shock with the tax, i think it cost us 112 for 12 months last year!

Lose the cars folks - public transport is not so convenient - but maybe we should be thinking about the environment as well as our debts.
(I live in a rural area - poor public transport - but with an occasional taxi and a lot of personal effort it really is cheaper and it's ok - Lose the status symbol and use legs)
This is not meant to be inflammatory but cars are just not necessities.

As for sshopping - all this talk of cheap supermarkets - price comparisons - not in most rural areas.

Ebay and charity shops rock!

Public transport would cost more than running my car and I still wouldn't get to work!
giving up my car is not an option! It would also mean shopping would be impossible, although I might save something by not doing any!

Absolutely no way - I hate public transport! If someone could give me a good reason to give up my car, that gets me from A-B when I want to, so that I can add another couple of hours onto my day using dirty public transport (which isn't safe at night or in the dark anyway) and then I might consider it. I would either get to work early or late so it really isn't an option.

Pay for as much as you can with cash. Spending £50 on a credit card doesn't seem like real money ... but when you are handing over what has probably cost you a good few hours of hard work it's a completely different matter and makes me ask the question "do I really want/need this?".

The other thing I find makes me more frugal is using my Cashplus card ... I try to keep a particular balance on it (usually for emergencies), if I go to buy something with it it makes me think twice because if I use up that amount then I've got to go to all the trouble of finding a Post Office to top the card up again. Quite often I've walked away from the potential purchase which has just gone to show that I didn't really need it after all!

Going back to the petrol bit - I drive a company car, average about 250 miles per day and fill up at BP for nectar points. (Partner will have a stroke if I go to Shell - they sponsor Ferrari!!!! Avid Lewis fan!!!!) also Tesco for their points, get the vouchers and stick them on the board in the office - £112 and still coming in. I desperately want to go "home" for a visit so might be able to convert to air miles and any other bits of money I can save over the next year.

It broke my heart going to Shell last weekend being another Lewis fan! Problem was it was the only non supermarket petrol station around - I won't be going there again if I can help it though!

I did have a little smile to myself - the staff had their Ferrari polo shirts on and I was standing their in my McLaren shirt after Lewis had won in the wet in Japan!
