'Half consider IVA to escape debts'

Press Association
Saturday September 1, 2007 11:13 AM

More than half of Britons would consider taking out an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) if they were in serious debt.

Four out of 10 people said they would only consider an IVA as a last resort, but 11% said they thought the arrangements were perfectly acceptable, according to price comparison website moneysupermarket.com.

At the same time, 9% said they thought IVAs helped alleviate debt and should be made more widely available, and 17% said they were a good alternative to being made bankrupt.

But worryingly, 49% of people admitted they did not really know what an IVA was.

An IVA is a form of insolvency, in which lenders agree to freeze interest payments on debts in return for a set amount being repaid each month for a term of around five years.

Recent Government figures showed there was a 35% jump in the number of people taking out an IVA in England and Wales during the second quarter of the year, compared with the previous three months.

Tim Moss, head of debt at moneysupermarket.com, said: "For people suffering from spiralling debts, an IVA might seem like an ideal escape route.

"However, an IVA is not something that should be entered into lightly and without considered thought.

"It is a serious financial agreement with creditors that will typically last five years. Once entered into, it will make obtaining any forms of credit, even for such everyday items as a mobile phone contract, almost impossible."

Hi
It,s concerning that nearly half of the people surveyed do not understand an IVA yet more than half would enter into one !!!
Problem we have is that the IVA is portrayed as an easy solution in the newspaper adds and in the tv adverts and we all know that it,s far from easy.
I think people should be warned not so much the effect on their credit rating but more about how unflexible and hard an IVA actually is.

I'm fed up with seeing adverts telling me I can wipe off x% of debt using little known government legislation and making it sound so easy. I really admire anyone who sees an IVA through to the end, and I wish I'd found this forum before I signed my proposal - I made my first post the night before my creditors meeting so it was a bit late by then! I'd been reading for a while but was too embarrassed to post! I think with the benefit of advice from this site I might have done things a bit differently, and it might have worked out.

Andy, I don't know if you can answer this, but I was wondering how many people are registered on this site compared to a year ago?

Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, today is the present - a gift to make the most of.

I for one had never heard of an iva back in January! I'd seen the adverts but I thought they must be some sort of scam! Back then I wouldn't have even considered it an option. How things change!
Just a thought on the membership numbers though. The increase could be due to the sites increase in visibility on search engines as well. I spent a lot of time searching for information online before I entered into anything and didn't find this site till the evening my IVA was approved.
I hope more people find this site as a first port of call in future.
