Not so much but I imagine there was some of it going on amongst the slightly more affluent population. Not so much for the poorer people.

My parents never had credit - the TV was rented so if you didn't pay they came and took it back! I still run my white goods into the ground. Don't buy a new one unless the old one has packed up.

I do like a decent mobile though (not fussed if it isn't quite the latest model and you usually have to put down a lot of money upfront, even on a contract!)

Never been one for designer clothes or the latest shoes - I shop at Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys and Ebay! A once a year trip to Birmingham may well yield a trip to H&M or Primark but that's it!

I, too, generally wait until a domestic (white goods) appliance dies a natural death before replacing it, but even then, don't always replace with new. My cooker went west after 20 years use and has recently been replaced with a reconditioned one ( which is actually better spec).

My parents rented their TV until around the turn of the century. As did I ... started with Radio Rentals, fell out with them and went to Granada, who ceased trading, so I was forced to buy one ... coincidentally the same one I was renting ( got it for a song).

Contract phones .. they laugh at me when upgrade time comes around because all I want my phone to do is make and receive calls !!! And, I am of the age when bigger is better (so I can see it). However, this time round I did get a posher phone with a touchscreen ( but buttons too -- can't be without buttons )... but it will remain 90% underused ---- saved a fiver on the tariff though [:)]

Clothes -- I am "Man at Primark" .. live in t-****rs and leans these days ( even at work ) ... rebellion for those days in uniforms and business suits. Mind you, the good thing about uniforms is that you don't have to think about what to wear!

Just as well this isn't a "Lonely Hearts" ad ... I don't come over too well [8D]

[:D][:D]

We used to be with Radio Rentals as well and then Granada. We have bought new TV's for a while now though. Again, we normally wait until they have died before getting another one.

I do buy new for the washing machine/dryer/dishwasher though.

I like uniforms for that reason as well.

Do love my mobile though and do use the internet on it as I'm blocked from most sites at work.

Oh that bring back memories - Betamax :-)

I Remember getting my first CD player - paid about £240 at the time, now they cant give them away :-)

Always buy new white goods - as the enery ratings tend to be a lot better now and most now come with 2-5 year guarantees.

I did choose VHS and it cost me £300 and I had to have HP!

We do use our CD player in the house sometimes but in the car I now plug in the MP3 player and have that blasting out.

I remember getting my first portable CD player and used to love it!

We're pretty much the same here, replace White goods when they die, the car when it costs more to repair than it is worth. We were gutted a few years ago when our tv packed in, we bought it when we got married and that was in 1983 so it would have been about 21 years old. As for mobiles, Mrs 4kids is currently running an old pay as you go handed down by our teenage son, mine is an iPhone 4; supplied and paid for by work. Our car is 9 years old, my motorbike 15 and I'm quite happy with them thank you. I do wonder how we ended up in so much debt, it's not as though we went on expensive holidays, last time we went abroad was 19 years ago; since then it's been courtesy of the Sun mainly.
Alas, I am dying beyond my means.

We bought loads of cars over the years, that and expensive holidays and me wanting to spend, spend, spend is what caused our problems.

I do upgrade my mobile as soon as I can, have no idea how old the white goods are and the cooker is 7 years old. Our last vacuum cleaner was courtesy of parents as a Christmas present, as was new tyres for the car (seperate years). Last year was a satnav. We ask for useful things now rather than the frivolous stuff we used to have.

Do you remember those Phillips ( I think) Laser disc jobbies -- bit like 12 inch DVDs ? I always wanted one of those but could never afford one -- then they disappeared !

I have still got my record collection with turntable - remember going into the shops looking at the LP covers for hours - often the covers were better than the music

I still have a Mitsubishi linear tracking player. It played normal discs but it vertical rather than horizontal. They never caught on.

I still have my record collection as well.

Lol our first Video Player as child had a remote control that had a wire running from it to the machine!! My Mum and I recorded the movie "Fantastic Voyage" on it and we sat in silence the whole time as we weren't sure if our voices would be recorded too!! Happy days! [:D][:I]

My first one was like that as well. My original VCR lasted me for years and when I eventually upgraded I gave it to my Dad and he used it for years as well.
