I filled for bankrupcy on the 11 may 2004. Since then I have come up against a brick wall in trying to get a bank account with a debit card. I have a std cash card account that has never been over drawn or shown any signs failure inthe last 1 1/2 years that I have had the account. The question or advise that I need to ask, is do I have to apply to the courts for a letter of discharge in order to prove that I am now clear of bankrupcy. Up until now I ahev not been contacted by the courts to indicate that there has been any issues that might irease my period of bank rupcy?

You might have a problem opening a 'normal' bank account until the bankruptcy drops off your credit rating.

Hi
you may already have seen previous posts but the COOP provide an account called CASHMINDER
this gives you direct debit / standing order / telephone & internet banking PLUS a Visa Electron card.
Not quite as good as a visa debit card but a great first step. It can be usd in lots of places. sainsburys / petrol stations & loads of shope / internet.

If however you need to book easy jet or travelodge you might also consider getting a TUXEDO prepaid mastercard. This acts like a mastercard credit card but is more like a phone top up card. We encourage all of our clients to have one.

So far I haven't had any problems with my Visa Electron card and it hasn't been refused anywhere.

Hi
The electron card is not accepted universally,I couldn't order flowers online today using it,luckily I do have a credit card.
Think Banking do offer a full debit card[maestro],the account is open to all and you will be accepted regardless of your credit history.
There is a £12.50 fee each month for single accounts and £17.50 for joint plus a £25 set up fee.The debit card is great but I found the service a bit hit and miss recently.Contacting them by phone will take you between 5 and 10 mins. They have talked about an online account for about a year now and is much needed,in my opinion.
Regards

I would have stayed with Think Banking if they'd had the online service - it would have made such a difference. I would have preferred to fill in a secure form online each month to tell them how much money to transfer across - much easier (and cheaper!) than phoning an 0845 number!

As far as I know companies get a percentage of the call costs from 0845 and 0870 numbers. It's a cheek really as half the time I phone these numbers I'm ringing to complain to the company!
