i cancelled the direct debit as andy advised due to the fact im going into a DMP
they still have taken the amount out of my bank
How can they do this when the direct debit was cancelled last week?
that money was for my dmp
and to make matters worse just had a debit of £99 taken from my halifax account for home shopping, now will have to ring them to see about it as i know i havent purchased anything, didnt have any funds available to buy anything with
Surely this is covered under the direct debit guarentee thing. If it was cancelled then your bank had no right to pay egg the money when they asked for it.
Discharged today the 8th feb 2012. View is much brighter now.

I suppose it depends on how long before it was due that the DD was cancelled.
Sometimes it takes a few days to filter through. If it was a long time beforehand though then they should not have paid it, and you need to get in touch with the bank.
You definitly need to check out the home shopping debit just in case someone has got hold of your details. It's not one of these delayed payments is? Did you buy something a while ago and they've only just taken the money out?
Have you changed your bank yet? If not, I would do so at the earliest opportunity, swap over any direct debits you need to and then close that account if you can.

Dave had this problem a couple of years ago. He cancelled a direct debit and the company reinstated this with a different number and took it again. Natwest told him they are perfectly entitled to do this and didn't really want to know, despite the DD guarantee.
A company I had a DD payment set up for (car lease payment) and cancelled completely out of the blue took a payment eight months later. I rang Nationwide and they immediately recalled the payment.
This is why I don't like DDs and have very few of them on my account now ... it is like giving someone open access to your finances [:(]
I've only once had problems with them, a few years ago when I had a car on finance. My DD was fine, but Nissan had set up another direct debit on my account for the same amount. This was somone elses DD, which meant I was paying for their car as well as my own!!!!!!!! It was soon sorted though (bet the other person was chuffed someone else was paying for their car!)
Other than that, I've had no problems at all.

I still prefer paying by DD as I don't have to remember to make the payments. It also works out cheaper in a lot of cases. I was a bit gutted that Petplan had taken 2 payments out of my account this month for Harry's insurance! If I'd bothered reading the paperwork when it arrived I would have known that they would do this though!
panic over went on co-op account today and the money hasnt gone out PHEWWWWW
with the debit of £99 you wont believe it went out of the halifax account on statement says home shopping with a phone number, anyway rang them apparently a company rang me about a catalogue for holidays and i agreed for it to be sent which may i add i cannot remember
anyway they charged me £99 membership fee, sharply rang them today and its been returned thank god
LOL my life is so exciting
exactly BUt i didnt authorize them to take £99 didnt have £99
lady said well you agreed to the catalogue to be sent, so i replied yes i maybe did but i didnt authorise the £99
well will be back in my account in 3-5 days thankfully
i begrudged the £3.50 next catalogue to, i wont get anymore sent once the DMP is set up anyway
Presumably though LD, you must have given them your bank details for them to be able to take the payment out.
