Hello all

Unfortunately when told to open new bank account we went and opened one at First Direct.

Our ip then told us they would close this as First Direct now has a no IVA or DMP customer policy.

We then was told by our Ip that we would be fine with a HSBC account we have now both opened an account here but we are reading on here that they may also close account

we have just made applications to nationwide but they have declined our application

any ideas we just need a basic account each hopefully with debit card and cheque book also a joint account to set up direct debits from

help please any ideas anyone

nationwide said we could appeal the decision by going into branch once we recieve a letter.

If you are applying for bank accounts it is important to do this in person at the branch and not over the interent which is what I suspect you have done.

Internet applications will nearly always be declined due to credit scoring systems used on these.

Alternatively Barclays and Abbey both offer a basic account which is available to people whom have been insolvent.

You can try appealing but the problem is most likely you are not applying for a basic account. Cheque books normally only come with a current account, I dont know of a single basic account that gives one. Also on most you will get a cash card and not a debit card. I think Co-op and Nationwide are generally the most accepting for basic accounts. I would imagine you applied for Nationwide's current account previously(i think I read somewhere there are two flex accounts - only one of which is the proper basic account).

Try going in person with your ID, its often better than trying to do it online. HSBC are linked to first direct. I have a HSBC account, they are my main creditor, I just went into LLoyds and opened a cash card account within 10 mins, but it really depends who your creditors are. I would try Barclays or Co-op. There is also the think bank or greg pennington account, guarunteed acceptance with this.

Hi,

Go to Nationwide in person. I did mine in 10 minutes face to face and they were brilliant.

I only have a cashcard but do have internet banking for SO's and DD's etc.

I've found I don't miss a chequebook and debit card.

Hope this helps.

Julie

I understand your concerns but I feel going in person is the best way of getting a new bank account. I really have heard good things about the Nationwide but it is important to go in person and be upfront and honest about your debt problems, make sure you apply for the basic Flex Account which shouldn't be credit scored and is listed as being suitable for Bankrupts and those in an IVA.

You have nothing to be ashamed of, you are dealing with your debt problems and should be commended for soing so.

All the best.

Hi jd i applied to abbey, and even though id defaulted by then with some of my creditors they excepted me and gave us a current account with card and cheque book even offered OD that i politely turned down,i understand what you say about going into banks or building societys, and feeling, that you are commiting a crime by asking for something that we all have a right to,im the same i did mine on line and just sent the relevant items they requested by post, also like you jd i lost so much confidence but im now feeling more positive than in a long time,i still have bad days but i just keep focusing on positives, you will get there.xx

Thats interesting, I always thought there would be a high chance a current account would be closed or downgraded on successful IVA/BR - as it would be flagged when then banks search the register. Maybe someone could clarify as I would like a debit card.

Think banking 08456343499 offer an account for all.You get a maestro debit card and can pay DD and standing orders, online banking to follow soon.It costs £12.50 a month and is well worth it,I use it as do many other forum members and its all done over the phone[no branches]

I checked my credit file and they did a credit search, this was before iva but from looking at my credit report i see they checked it again on 1/4/07,and the iva is registered on there, but my account still remains in tact.
I soppose if id excepted the o/d then it would have been cancelled.

An overdraft would not usually be allowed whilst in an IVA, however, do not assume that you won't continue to be offered credit even during your IVA term. We have had some clients whom (totally outside of our control) have been offered credit cards whilst in an IVA and accepted these!

It will be up to the account provider as to whether or not you are allowed to have an account with them. Some companies (HSBC / First Direct) seem to have started to close accounts when they have found out someone is on the insolvency register but thankfully so far others don't seem to have followed this lead.

Thanks for this info... I will look further into it as I would like a debit card. Also good to know they didnt close your account, maybe the o/d makes all the difference.

Thanks also Oliver - I was posting before I read your post... cant believe credit cards are being offered to people on a IVA - Im sure some people would be tempted by it too. But Im equally sure it would not be a good way to conclude a IVA successfully!
