Hi, I`m Linda and I`m in a desperate, my marriage ended some 41/2 years ago and I left the marriage with nothing. I managed initially but became very ill with anorexia and depression and fell into debt. I returned to work 21/2 years ago as a full time nurse and existed but the debts grew. I became ill again 6 months ago and took advice fron Capitalise who I thought were doing something having heard nothing for 6 months and the letters and phone calls having started up again i wrote to my adviser who has wrote back saying my file is closed and I don`t know what to do. I`m very frightened, i`m not answering the door or the phone also I`ve now been put on days and a reduced contract because of my health. I`m embarressed to say but my first husband left me destitute so I am a discharged Bankrupt of some 16 years. Any advice at all would be welcome thank you.

Hi and welcome. Please dont be scared, there WILL be a sollution for you.

I would suggest you speak with a proffessional Insolvency Practitioner to discuss all the options available to you and the pro's and con's of each.

Take a look at www.iva.com

There you will find a list of Insolvency Practitioners and reviews on each.
It is advised to speak with 2 or 3 companies and then decide which advice and sollution you are more comfortabe with.

You are in the right place for honest and non-judgemental advice and support.

Good luck

Hi Linda and welcome to the forum

I am so sorry to hear that you are so stressed out about your situation, but you will find a lot of support on this site from both professional and experienced posters.

What were the company you refer to doing for you - a DMP or an IVA? How much do you owe to creditors and how much do you feel you would be able to afford to repay on a monthly basis?

I suggest that you contact an insolvency practitioner as soon as possible to put your mind at rest that you are going to take control of these debts again and deal with them properly this time. Once you have shared the problem with someone who can help, you are going some way to getting it resolved.

Good luck and keep posting on the forum.
Regards, Melanie Giles, Insolvency Practitioner

Hi Linda

I can honestly say I felt the way you did 2 and a half years ago, I was terrified and tied in knots, I couldnt sleep or eat with it all, I became quite ill too and I also worked in the NHS.

Please phone someone and get some answers, you will feel a lot better, although the situation seems dire now and there are these horrible negative voices inside you, its not an impossible situation.

Your health is much more important that any amount of money. Can you say a little bit more about the amounts you owe and assets that you have then I am sure that you can get some advice right now?

I am sorry youre feeling this way but you are amongst friends here who have been through the same sort of thing, me included.

Good luck and take care.

Hi Linda. I would like to reiterate what the other posters have said but also to tell you not to be embarrassed or ashamed. Like you we are professionals who deal with debt problems daily. You, as a healthcare worker, deal with all sorts of ailments and diseases but undoubtedly pass no judgement but do your job to the best of your ability.

Speak to someone at the first opportunity and find out what is best for you to enable you to get on with your life.

Hi, thanks to all of you for replying it is reassuring to know that things are`nt as dire as they appear to be. To answer a few of your questions;- Melanie, I saw someone from a debt advisory service called Capitalise, this was arranged through the local CAB, she took away all my correspondance and I as I said initially I believed that something was being done but I think she has probably sent letters requesting a 6 month breathing space and then just closed my file. My debt is as follows;- Welcome Finance £10,000. Student Loans £4,000, Morgan Stanley £2,500, Argos storecard £2,500, Capital One £1,500, B&Q storecard £1,000, Etam storecard £500. I`m a bit lost with it all as some of the debts have been sold on to collectors. With rent and all other outgoings I`ve literally nothing left to offer these people, they have been quite frightening that`s why I don`t answer my phone anymore, I thought they had to proffer you respect and understanding? Thanks again for your time advice Linda

Hi Linda,

Welcome from me too...try to contact a few companies as suggested. You'll get advice on the best option for you. As for respect from companies, I'm afraid that doesn't happen when you';re in their system. I would say though, don't take it personally, it happens to us all.

The people on the other end of the phone are doing their job and if that means phoning time and time again, then they will and they do I'm afraid. Don't let your health suffer, you've come a long way and nothing is more important than you health and well being.

Please keep posting xx

If you have nothing left Linda then bankruptcy would be an option it offers a clean fresh start without any debts.

It can be a daunting thought but those that have gone through it all seem to feel its not as bad as they thought it would be.

There are certain professions that are affected by bankruptcy and there is a small notice put in the paper but you would have trouble finding it even searching with a magni glass.

We have all been harrassed with creditors, the thing is as others have said the calls are from operators who get paid for extracting money and are not paid to be nice. They need you to make a payment and will say anything to secure this. Do not be bullied by these calls or feel ashamed or less than human. They are paid to do this job, its nothing personal, simply explain you situation and hang up, you cannot get blood out of a stone. I was terrified at first but once I realised that it was pointless entering into a conversation with them I simply said, sorry I cant pay you and I hung up.

Once you have spoken with an expert about the possible options open to you youre only a few steps away from a new and debt free life.

Good luck hun, we are all there for you.

I agree with Lily - in the absence of no disposable income bankruptcy would appear to be the best option - but I am suprised that CAB would not deal with this for you.

Please discuss your situation with an IP - visit www.iva.com for reviews on several and pick one or two. Melanie might be correct and bankruptcy might be the appropriate solution for you but take the advice first and give that person details of everythiung. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi, thank you again for your advice and I was thinking that Bankruptcy is my only option. As I`m very much on my own with this can anyone recommend a place to go in the Romford area where I could get help? Can I make myself Bankrupt? Is there a fee for declaring bankruptcy? I will start answering the phone and endeavour to stay strong and not dissolve into tears when they rip me to shreds. Take care everyone.
