absolutely Skip, I lost my mum to breast cancer 3 yrs ago and it changed me beyond recognition, that's when I really reined in my spending as it suddenly hit me how pointless all this 'tat' is and what was really important, I would give all the material things, all the holidays I have ever had to see my mum and give her a huge hug just one more time, since then, I made the decision to give up my very well paid but extremely stressful job to return to nursing on half the salary I had, so that I could have the time to spend with my kids and my family and what really matters, this path led me to having to take out an IVA but I have no regrets, now i have the time to go to my kids assemblies and plays at school, to bake with them, spend time just laughing with them and talking about their day and to create those all important precious memories they will keep forever and which I have of my wonderful mum, and I'm going to stop now as I have tears in my eyes!!!!

Thanks Jan and lem, and lem, I'm so sorry about your mum.

Like you I would give anything to see my aunt as I never got to say goodbye as she didn't want to see anyone - that really puts material things into perspective.

it certainly does, my mum taught me so much as she was an expert at handling money, it's a shame I never took any notice until after her death but I do think that having the last 4 years preparing for an IVA (if that's possible) by learning to stick to a budget (even though we weren't really getting anything paid off it's amazing how we managed to cut back for so long!) obviously something stuck!

But no I would never take credit for material things in the future, perhaps a car if it was necessary but nothing else, nothing else matters but your health and being with the people you love

Sorry to hear that Lem. I'm lucky in that both of my parents are still alive. They do my head in sometimes but I wouldn't be without them.

Sometimes we need reminding of how much material things are- well materialistic compared to loved ones.

Lol Jan, make the most of every minute you have with them, my mum did my head in for years, we had a very strained relationship at times but I always say to people now who have tough relationships to really think about what matters, you never know what tomorrow will bring x

lem, I love them to bits but they do my head in at times. I will really miss them when they are gone though.

My Dad died 12 1/2 years ago and I really regret not spending more time with him as I know now we had a lot in common.

My mum is lovely but does my head in. I love her to bits though.

It's beautiful Ginger. I'd love to live somewhere like that.

I don't drink wine, but substitute Baileys for wine and I'm in full agreement!

I'll provide the wine if you provide the lodgings for a weekend ginger!
