hi my partner has an IVA currently and is 2 years into this. We would like to get married next year but are wondering where we would stand financially as I currently work but receive child tax credit and working tax credit for my 3 sons. Would I lose this? At present my partner has a job that means he has to travel all over the south west so he would also need to keep his flat on as it is central to his territory and he needs to stay there for a couple of nights a week so between his IVA and rent he would not be able to help me financially if I lost my benefits.. would the IVA or tax credit take all this into account? many thanks..

Hey tam, welcome to the forum. You would not lose any benefits because your partner is on an IVA so please don't worry about that. Are you living together now or are going to move in together next year?

Hi Viki, we are planning to move in together when we get married or keep on both houses due to his job until he can get one based in my region but have just spoken to the tax credits who have said they will not take into account his IVA payment and they will take into account both earnings regardless of living expenses so financially we would be worse off :-(

Hi Tam.
If your partner has his own property which he lives in surely the tax credit people cannot take his income into account? Until your partner actually finds a position near at hand maybe he should remain in his flat.

Only when he finds a position near home with less travel and reduced expenditure would he move in, as then any reduction in benefits would be offset by the reduced outgoings.

His IVA payments should not be affected either until he actually moves in, at which time a new income and expenditure will need prepared to reassess affordability.

It may be worth asking the tax credit people if his income is taken into account if he is living elsewhere. Let us know and good luck.
