Home decor. Hello all, I just wonder how others manage to try and keep their home in a reasonable state over the period of IVA. We are three years in and the house is looking shabby! Not sure it can last another two years without a lick of paint, bathroom needs grouted and sealed, just haven't got a spare penny for a tin of paint a month, when u are stuck in the house all the time it can get depressing! Other major things are wrong with house like leaking toilet, broken back gate and 3 windows have their seal broken, but know they have to wait!
I know how you feel. 12 months in and I have a leather sofa which is disintegrating, a broken bed frame being supported by books, a broken floor standing lamp, a broken food blender and a leak from the shower into the front room.
Can't even begin to imagine what things will be like in 4 years time.....
Can you trade any skill you have for someone maybe fixing the things that need fixing. It is hard and my bathroom definitely needs gutting. Hubby being in the trade helps as he gets bits from work (totally legit) but major things are on hold.
IVA final payment left the bank on the 26th January 2013...looking forward to a debt free future.
Hi Michelled1249. I can't offer any advice but I can empathise with you completely. I’m just coming to the end of a 6 year IVA and our house hasn’t had anything done to it all. We have a small contingency but that is for dire emergencies only. The carpet is threadbare in places, the sofa is cream crackered and the house is generally tatty. I could go on and on. It’s a reminder of the situation I’m in or should I say we as even though the IVA is in my name my wife is just as affected by it.
Trading skills is a great idea, I did some electrical work for a friend, who in return gave me some 3/4 full tins of paint. I gave them to the wife and told her to crack on!!

We have managed to do the odd bit of decorating, but then I do earn extra income and get to keep a proportion of it so save it towards things like that, we desperately need a new sofa too and am going to try and save hard this year to get one, but then once you're out of an iva unless you use credit you have to save towards things anyway so I guess it's something we all have to get used to
i have to admit to laughing out loud to Merlin's reply!
My hubby often trades skills, he's a carpenter and electrician so he'll do the odd job here and there in return for a favour. does work but I've no particular skill so can't do that myself.

It`s depressing isn`t it looking around the house at all that needs doing and not being able to do it.
My boiler`s on borrowed time (quoted £2750)British gas keep managing to repair it up to now though, 2 window and 2 french door panels misted (quoted £350), carpets worn, decorating needed in several areas, Fence panels absolutely falling apart (quoted £400)...No chance of getting any of these things done, car MOT due end April - had to miss it`s service because of needing two new tyres for it.
It`s the same for all of us in IVA`s I guess.
I had quite a bit of overtime last year, so I`m luckier than most, but what I managed to put aside was swallowed up by car repairs/spares and having to buy a new TV...It`s a good job I got the overtime I did otherwise I quite simply wouldn`t have been able to keep my car on the road.
Never mind, just over half way there[8D]

I was serious Lesley. I do all sorts, which does not include paint or wallpaper. Her-in-doors is a dab hand with a brush and she honestly enjoys painting. The list of jobs gets larger, but make do and fix repairs for now seem to be working. Once the IVA payments are finished I can see a full on DIY spree on the cards.

It is difficult but I would suggest trying to sell any unwanted stuff on eBay or a car boot then wait till paint is on promotion somewhere like b&q or homebase, wilkinsons also sell a limited range of paint at reasonable prices.
It's amazing what old junk you can sell and people will buy on eBay.

I haven't started my iva yet but I am hoping to have cash available to at least by some paint. I have no surplus money at the moment. Hoping that iva route pays my debts but does leave me with more money than ihave at moment which is a big fat nothing.
I do empathise with you. Final payment made in January but the list of things to be done is so long (and expensive) that I don't really know where to start.
Wilkinson paint is fantastic ...just as good as crown or dulux but half the price.
My hubby is a Greenkeeper so during our IVA he helped a few friends in their gardens and in return our carpenter and electrician friends did some of our odd jobs.
Sad as it is any birthday and christmas money we received as gifts we spent (and still do) on DIY improvements ....it always used to be a decorated room every six months.
